Owaka - teapot mecca of the south

in #travel6 years ago

One day, a few years ago now, a friend decided she wanted to show me around a part of the south I'd not been to before - Owaka.

Owaka sits in The Catlins, an area in the South Otago region of the South-East corner of the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand.

I haven't explored the area much, but it is a great touristy place, and along the coast there are some good surfing spots I believe.

So anyway there was one particular spot she wanted to show me.
She knew I loved drinking tea, and so this place turned out to be the perfect surprise - quirky, imaginative, delightful.

Meet Teapotland!!!

A true mecca of teapot-ness, laid out for display on someone's front lawn.

I wish now that I'd gotten out of the car to explore further, but all I did was use the camera zoom, and eyeballed the place.

So many amazing teapot designs!

Apparently the owner does rotate the display, which is good - always keep things fresh and interesting.
If I had designed something like this, out in the open, I would fret constantly that items would be stolen or destroyed. I hope that never has, and never will, happen to this place.

If you want to see more (and probably much better photos) of their display, simply google the place.

Here is an article with a bit of background about how things started:

And some info on the The Catlins, as part of the Southern Scenic Route:

If you ever get down to Southland (NZ), then you might absolutely want to make this area part of your trip!
Tea is the best!!! :D

Fun fact: The teapot was invented in China during the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368). source

That teapot land is so cool, what a fun place to visit thanks for sharing with us

Sometimes you can only find things out by word of mouth, lol.

OHh yes especially in NZ so many cool things that are not really advertised

Haha awesome, i never realized there were so many teapots in Owaka. Will go and check it out sometime. Thanks

Much more interesting than the Ohakune carrot or the Gore trout! ;)

Love the quirky things you can find around the place XD There used to be a teddy bear tree at one of the houses up the road, a couple of winters did their display in however. And it was slightly creepy as a lot of them seem to have been nailed in place D:

Haha that story quickly went from awwww, cute to ermagherd creepy!

What a fascinating place @ravenruis I have never heard of it before and think it is such a quirky idea but at least it puts Owaka on the map. I must go and put the kettle on. (:

Their place made me think of coming home and setting up a piggy bank farm on my front lawn, lol. :D

It is never wrong to put the kettle on! ;)
