USA roadtrip #18: Waheap Hoodoos (White Ghosts)

Our next day trip, which can easy be made from Page or like us from Lake Powell, is to the Wahweap Hoodoos.

To this day, this place is one of the secrets in the area, so you will meet just a few tourists. Few years ago, the exact location and the access to these bizarre rock formations weren’t officially published.
Probably, on one hand to protect this natural phenomenon from mass tourism and on the other hand to cause a stir with photos of these strange hoodoos.

As a first stop, we recommend the Visitor Center in Big Water. Here you will get a map with a description of the way to the hoodoos. You can also inquire about the condition of the road here. This should be done because this dirt road is not suitable for RVs.
Road to the parking space

On the access road you will pass an old fish farm and should not return if you face a cattle fence. These are intended only for the cows and can be opened and closed.

After about 4 miles, SUVs can drive a bit further, you reach the parking space. From here begins the hike to the Hoodoos, which are about 4 miles away. The path is a dry river bed which is exposed to the sun for most of the day and isn’t a really nice hike.

After about 4 miles you will come across the first hoodoo group.

From here you should keep your eyes open and go exploring.

Respect the nature and make sure to leave it as you found it.

Unser nächster Tagesausflug, der bequem von Page aus oder wie wir vom Lake Powell aus unternommen werden kann, sind die Wahweap Hoodoos.

Bis heute zählt dieses Gebiet zu den Geheimtipps in dieser Gegend und so trifft man bei der Besichtigung nur auf wenige Touristen. Zu verdanken ist diese Ruhe und Unberührtheit der Tatsache, dass bis vor einigen Jahren um den genauen Ort beziehungsweise den Zugang zu den bizarren Gesteinsformationen noch ein großes Geheimnis gemacht wurde.
Zum Teil wohl um dieses Naturphänomen vom Massentourismus zu schützen und zum Teil wohl um mit Fotos dieser merkwürdigen Hoodoos für Aufsehen zu sorgen.

Als erste Anlaufstelle empfehlen wir euch das Visitor Center in Big Water. Hier erhaltet ihr eine Karte mit der Wegbeschreibung zu den Hoodoos. Außerdem könnt ihr euch hier über den Zustand der Straße erkundigen. Diese ist wieder nur eine Dirtroad und nicht für RVs geeignet.

Auf dem Zufahrtsweg kommt man an einer alten Fischaufzuchtstation vorbei und sollte sich des Weiteren nicht von Viehzäunen aufhalten lassen. Diese sind nur für die Kühe gedacht und können geöffnet und geschlossen werden.

Nach etwa 4 Meilen, SUVs können noch etwas weiter fahren, erreicht man den Parkplatz. Ab hier beginnt die Wanderung zu den circa 4 Meilen entfernten Hoodoos. Der Weg ist ein ausgetrocknetes Flussbett, dass nahezu den ganzen Tag der Sonne ausgesetzt ist und auch landschaftlich nichts Besonderes bietet.

Nach etwa 4 Meilen stößt man dann auf die erste Hoodoo-Gruppe.

Ab hier sollte man die Augen offen halten und auf Erkundung gehen.

Respektiert dabei die Natur und achtet darauf, sie so zu hinterlassen wie ihr sie auch vorgefunden habt.
