How Can a British Tourist Catch a London Cab to Sydney Airport?

Having made the twenty-four-hour flight from Australia to the UK several times now, I’ve had more than a few opportunities to take a ride in the back of one of London’s humble black cabs; although to be fair, they’re not just black anymore, and you can find them in just about any colour.

With some 22,000 cabs, or hackney carriages as they’re also known, licenced to operate in the London these uniquely shaped and purpose build vehicles are virtually synonymous with the city. When you're there you see them everywhere, and thanks to the exceptionally difficult test that London cab drivers need to pass, which involves having to demonstrate an intimate knowledge of the geography of London’s streets, you can be assured that the old Hackney is an excellent, all be it slightly expensive, way to get you to where you need to go.

What I would never have expected to see though, was a London Taxi 17,000km (10,500 miles) from London driving through the streets of Sydney, yet that’s what happened yesterday. I was walking through the Sydney CBD when a black London Taxi pulled up to the traffic lights at the corner of Pitt and Goulburn Streets. Talk about doing a double take, the sight stopped me dead in my tracks, and I’m sure the driver thought I was nuts when I pulled out my mobile phone and started snapping pictures of his cab.

I quickly found out (thanks Google) that London Taxis is a small and relatively new Australian taxi company that has been operating in Sydney since 2014. So, the answer the question is quite simple, a British tourist (or anybody else for that matter) can catch a London Taxi to Sydney airport in the same way you would catch any other taxi; if the yellow light is on hail the driver or pull out your phone and call one. The trip should take about 20 minutes and will likely set you back about AUD $30.
