What is a trip to Barcelona without a visit to the La Boqueria Market? Located in the epicentre of Baecelona’s main tourist street, La Rambla (Las Ramblas as the locals know it), La Boqueria Market is world renowned and easily the most famous market in Barcelona, if not in the whole of Spain.

Open everyday from 8 am to 8 pm the market makes it onto the itinerary of practically any organised tour of Barcelona, and for good reason. This bustling market is a cacophony of sights, sounds, smells and tastes and has something for everyone.

Built on the ruins of an old convent, Sant Josep, from which it takes its full name, Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, the Spaniards have been selling things on this site for centuries. In fact, records show that markets have been held there as far back as the 1200s.

My top five tips for getting the best out of your trip to La Boqueria Market:

One: If you can, get there early. The market opens at 8 am, but it doesn't get jam-packed with tourists until about 11 am. Alternatively, if you can't be early plan your visit for the early evening when it’s usually less busy than in the middle of the day.

Two: Respect the locals. La Boqueria Market may be a tourist hotspot, but not everyone likes to have their photo taken, so ask first.

Three: Go to the back of the market. The stalls at the front of the market pay a higher rent and hence charge more. You’ll find that the stalls at the back are cheaper.

Four: Eat at one if the market bars. There are two that are very popular, El Quim de la Boqueira and Pinotxo Bar, but if you want to eat lunch there make sure you’re early as by 1pm they’ll be really busy and you’ll be waiting a while.

Five: The market is not a museum, so make sure you buy something. Just remember, this is not your typical local, neighbourhood market, so your not going to find those super cheap market prices.
