Holes in the Earth

One of the prettiest and most unique places I've ever traveled to was Dean's Blue Hole on Long Island in the Bahamas. Plunging to a depth of 200 meters in a bay west of Clarence Town on Long Island, Dean’s Blue Hole is one of the deepest known blue holes.

A blue hole is a term that is often given to sinkholes that are filled with water, while the entrance to them is located beneath the surface.

Enclosed on three sides by a natural rock amphitheater, and on the fourth side by a turquoise lagoon and powder white beach. There is never any swell or waves inside the Hole, and visibility can be up to 30 meters.

Freedivers from all over the world come to this hole to practice their skills and try and set new deep diving records. One such record was set a few years back of well over 100 meters. Due to the constant tidal changes and Swiss cheese like nature of the hole itself many species of fish can be seen traveling in and out of the hole.

Long Island itself is very beautiful and laid back, spending time there was truly a pleasure.
