Eating Dinner With A Chinese Family In Beijing | Highlights Of Traveling China

in #travel6 years ago

On our tour across China last year, Michelle and I had the chance to experience the hospitality and cooking of a local Chinese Family in the Dongcheng District of Beijing. The family hosted our entire travel group for an authentic meal.

We were served rice, green beans, pork, and chicken along with chips and sodas. Michelle is a pescetarian, meaning she eats fish but not meat, so she sat with the other members of the group with dietary restrictions. I remember the pork and chicken being tasty and flavorful, and I was told the non-meat eaters enjoyed their meal as well.

After the dinner, the father took us outside and told us about his life and his family. He made a career for himself in martial arts and both of his sons teach martial arts. One of his son's was successful enough to move to the United States to teach. You could tell he was very proud.

The man told us of his martial arts studio and how grand his dojo used to be. There were pictures and awards hanging all throughout the house. The dojo was once connected to his house, but in China the government owns all land. Every 70 years people must pay to keep using the property. If you can't pay then you lose it and the government gives land use rights to someone who can. The house and dojo were built very close to an ancient bell tower causing the property value to increase drastically and he could no longer pay for the land of his house and dojo. He chose to keep the house and continues teaching out of his home. The government might have stolen his property but they have yet to take his spirit and passion for martial arts.

Before we left, the father played us a song on an ancient Chinese two-stringed fiddle called the Erhu. It was a real pleasure to watch and listen. I will have a dtube video up shortly of the song he played.

Below are some pictures from the experience:

Have to learn some mArtial art?

Uncomplicated article. I learned a lot of interesting and cognitive. I'm screwed up with you, I'll be glad to reciprocal subscription))

You both seemed to be lucky to get some hospitality by the family. It sure is great to be a part of the family for some time .

While I do liked the career of his as a martial art teacher and his legacy is going on that is indeed one of the best thing !

Seems like he does play as well ;)

You both did had some nice time out with the family without a doubt !

Martial arts is a great art which is very useful for your own body. You have really enjoyed your tour. The food, the place and people are really great and caring.

Wow man!
Thats great, china is well known for their light and healthy food!
I really wanted too see china's food, and i am getting from you, thank yiu so much @slickwilly.

Let me start by appreciating you for adding to my vocabulary. I'm coming across the word pescetarian for the first time. Thank you

From the look of things,it obvious you enjoyed your time with the Chinese family...

But, do you speak Chinese?
If you don't, I don't know how you will understand the words in the song sang by the old man. Lol

Why are Chinese government making life difficult for her people like this? This is the second time I would be reading something negative about china today.
Why can't people pay once and own the land to themselves, why must the government be in control of everything?

Looking forward to the video

a very enjoyable trip with beloved family

Nice trip sir..enjoying with family is always outstanding.chinese are famous for their hospitality.

Sad to hear that the government take the property back, if they can't pay the money to the government, how the government can do this to his nation, to his people, that's ridiculous, I hope there will a new rule for them and then the government won't be able to take their places. and the people will live happily, i never thought china's government can do that,
btw it looks like you had a great time @slickwilly. Glad to see you smiling, keep sharing your journey with all of us :)

You had a great party sir its so cool to see you again.
