An Unique Stone Pagoda in Whaeom-sa Temple and The Discrepancy

in #travel5 years ago

There was an unique stone pagoda in front of Gakwhang-jeon hall.
I never’ve seen such a strange style of stone pagoda before.
The stone pagoda stood on the left side from the hall.

What made me curious at first was the body of the stone pagoda.
It was one rectangle stone.

Why did they make one story with rectangle stone ?
As we know, everything has its own meaning.
This one story stone rectangle seemed to express its own symbolic meaning.

In my understanding, the rectangle looks like to mean the Universe view point.
Did the Buddhist try the structure of the universe ?
Interesting thing was the Buddhist theory stressed the round shape as the ideal of the truth.

The small round stone seemed to express the Buddhist truth.
Here, the truth means the way of living the life.

I don’t know how I can explain this discrepancy.

Meanwhile, the supporting rectangle body was the statues of the stone lions.
This lion statues mean the protecting power for the Buddhist World.
But, the statues of lion looked not so powerful.
The face was carved to express the power though, the gesture was not so powerful.

We thought the pine as the representative tree.
It contains green color always.
This unchanged color was the symbol of the loyalty and the Korean scholars.

It was a small garden in front of Gakwhang-jeon.

Thank you for the description of pagoda, for many of us, who do not know much about Korean history we probably will not pay much attention to the form but when you mentioned that and then looking back this is really something that we do not often see in your previous post-rectangular shape, but on other hand the question is may be they wanted to use four lions on each corner that is why the shape is rectangular. I love lions in general, they represent power like you say but these figures they look not so furious but still majestic, especially once we see the features of face and expression. Beautiful statue and thank you for your thoughts.
