Are there still secret places left to discover in Europe? Absolutely. Experience Europe off the beaten track. Today I'd like to share an article about Moldova.

This is my brand new series here on steemit. "Travel off the Beaten Track" consists of ten different episodes and intends to inspire you for one of your next journeys!

Moldova: The Forgotten Country to Travel in Europe

Although Europe is one of the most visited continents on earth, there are still plenty of surprising hidden gems to be found. When you move away from the main tourist traps and many of the most crowded centers, you will find that there are parts of Europe that have been forgotten by mainstream travelers, which leaves their secrets open to discovery whether you are travelling alone or with a group of close friends.

I’ve found Moldova to offer a unique experience, and it hasn’t developed a huge tourism industry like Spain, the UK, Germany, and many of the countries along the Mediterranean. The overall feel is more intimate and that’s perfect when you want to see Europe off the beaten track.

If you’re ready to see a quieter side of Europe with rich culture, history, and amazing natural beauty, then these are the top destinations that you won’t want to miss when you travel Moldova.

Visit the Cricova Winery

15 kilometers north of Moldova’s capital is the town of Cricova. Although small and unassuming, the town has become famous all around the world, thanks to the Cricova Winery.

There are tours and tastings on offer every day, and the dining rooms found at the winery are exquisite. If you want a holiday that is classy and refined, then the Cricova Winery must be on your list of destinations.

The European Hall inside the winery is particularly impressive, with amazing architecture and beautiful furnishings. The cellars are the second largest in the country, and the tunnels used have existed for more than 500 years. This winery is so famous that it has been visited by ex U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. During World War II, the cellars and wine barrels were used to shelter ethic Jews as Nazi Germany moved east towards Russia.

Today, war is far off and Cricova will offer nothing but a great time that is steeped in history and abundant in delicious wine. The Cricova winemakers specialize in sparkling wines that are similar to French Champagnes and produced using the same methods.

Step Inside Living History at the Orhei Archaeological Complex

Although you will find the city of Orhei to be as modern as any other city in the world, it was developed in a region that is historically very important to the nation of Moldova. Nearby is the Orhei Archaeological Complex, one of the top archaeological sites in the country, and arguably one of the best in Europe.

The Orhei Archaeological Complex covers more than 200 hectares of the valley on the river Raut. There are remains of medieval structures and earthworks, as well as monasteries that date back centuries. The Orthodox architecture, artwork, and artifacts all make the complex worth visiting if you are interested in history. Even if history isn’t your passion, you will find beauty in the structures and the craftsmanship.

There are tours offered on most days, but you can expect these to be quite relaxed compared to other crowded tours in Europe. If you visit Orhei and the Archaeological Complex, then make sure you also look around the main city. You’ll find places to eat, cafés, and friendly locals. Urban explorers will delight at the beautiful stonework in the city, and even some of the more recent architecture has much more character than what you would find in the typical tourist cities.

Bendery Fortress

This Turkish castle was once part of the Ottoman empire. Today, it sits amongst a developing industrial and military area in Bender, Moldovia.

Don’t let the industrial surroundings put you off. Moldovia has been through some tumultuous periods in the last century, but some sites like Festung Tighina have been well preserved.

This is perhaps not a bad thing, because it leaves the site uncommercialized and ready for exploration by anyone who wants to see Europe off the beaten track. Despite some neglect in past decades, the castle itself is well preserved and it will be an exciting destination for anyone who is interested in European history. It is quite a unique feeling to step inside castle walls that once would have housed hundreds or even thousands of men at arms, along with great medieval war machines.

Note that there is no information center here - this really is off the beaten track! You’ll pay a small entrance fee and then the only thing to guide you will be your own curiosity.

Explore the Wineries just outside of Chisinau

With plenty of modern hotels and highly rated restaurants, you will find that Chisinau in Moldova doesn’t lack any of the amenities that you’re used to. On top of that, it will also be your gateway to some of the most beautiful nature and wildlife that will be found in all the country.

Known as the Green Capital of Moldova, Chisinau sits on the Bac river. It’s also the heart of the most important wine region in the country, and there are countless breweries and wineries to visit in the city surroundings. Many of these offer bed and breakfast style accommodation, so you could even stop for a day or two while enjoying the local product. Wineries range from rustic to elegant. You will find that Moldovan architecture and construction is highly detailed, and even some of the most affordable places to stay and eat will have fantastic designs, particularly when compared to the average place in Western Europe.

If you want to treat yourself to a couple of days of wine tasting in a region that is naturally beautiful, then Chisinau needs to be on your list when you travel Moldova.

Dendrarium Park and other Things to do in Chisinau

This huge public park is perfect for walking in the clean air. It has its own lake and feels like you’ve stepped out of the city, if only for a while. If you’re in Chisinau, then make sure you take the time to spend an afternoon here. If you’re visiting during the spring or summer, then bring a picnic along.Dendrarium Park is beautiful at any time of the year, but it can look particularly picturesque when the trees have shed their leaves and the snow falls. Take a stroll through here with your partner or bring the family to explore one of the largest city parks in Europe. The grounds are well maintained, and the park is very safe.If you’re in the capital, you could also:

  • Visit the National Museum of History of Moldova
  • Spend a night at the National Opera and Ballet Theatre
  • Take a full city tour, most of which include trips to a winery for tasting.

Travel Moldova and See A Different Side of Europe

Traveling Europe off the beaten track to Moldova could introduce you to a unique culture in a country that is still developing with every year that goes by. A famous wine region, historical attractions, and a welcoming population make it one of the best places to tour if you think you’ve seen it all.

Best regards, Stefan.

I liked this gentle tour. Don't think I've ever been on a guided tour in my life. Mostly, I try to get a sense of the people and the place by just wandering around, going to small local museums. Picking up a local map is also usually quite enjoyable. Moldova looks like a nice stop off the beaten path.
