Crossing the Mexican Border and Driving to Mexico With a Dog (Video)
We were almost to the border when we started contemplating what type of Mexican car insurance we should get. In all the chaos of the weeks leading up to the drive to Mexico, we weren't able to get any. It seemed tempting to buy it for a few days (until we had more time to research what levels of insurance we wanted), but after a call to Geico's partner company, we learned that a year’s worth of premium insurance (the highest level you can buy) was about $430. It would’ve cost $60 for just 3 days.
If you’re ever driving your car in Mexico, you need Mexican car insurance. You can literally end up in prison if you get into a bad accident without it.
Once we got that taken care of, it was soon time for the biggest milestone yet...
Crossing The Mexican Border: Passports, Pet Paperwork, and Permits
What we heard about crossing the border into Mexico was that most cars get the green light to go. If you get the green light, you just keep on driving. The occasional car will get a red light, and if you’re one of those unlucky ones, you may have to answer a few more questions and get a couple bags searched before they’ll let you pass.

i might buy a doberman, i couldnt imagine driving like that with a dog lol i barely can do it with another human
Lol! After our experiences so far, we wouldn't recommend traveling with a pet unless it's already a beloved member of the fam. Of course we love Laska to pieces, but she's a huge pill sometimes. It can also be more tricky to find rentals that accept pets.
Wow! Thats alot of money for insurance. I never got any insurance to drive in Mexico. lol
I don't think I'd want to take the risk of not getting insurance!
But yeah, it's crazy expensive to have a US car in Mexico. Throw in the $400+ for the TIP and the continued insurance in the US (it's required to get Mexican insurance) and it really adds up. If it weren't for Laska, we'd probably find a way to travel by bus instead.
You mean 400pesos??? The vehicle permit was only about $50USD when I went and it was good for 6 months.
I did indeed mean $400 USD. For any vehicle 2007 or newer, you have to pay a $400USD refundable deposit plus an additional non-refundable fee. I believe the total charge on our card was a little over $460. $400 will get refunded to the card when we stop by a Banjercito office on our way out of the country.
Did not know that. I guess it pays have an old car sometimes. lol
You still need to get the TIP if you're driving an older car, but the deposit might "only" be $200 instead of $400.
