Packing Up Our Tangerine Prius - Our First Day Driving to Mexico (VIDEO)

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Are we doing this?

We're really doing this?? Everything we own is packed into two suitcases each and loaded into our compact, tangerine-colored Prius C. And we are driving to Mexico. There's no turning back now...

Day 1 On Our Journey Through Mexico

It was a huge scramble to get paperwork filed, vet documents completed, bank/currency schtuff sorted, and everything finished before launch, but we somehow did it. Of course, none of it would have been possible without the help of both of our families and friends.

Shoutout to Dabney, Don, Paul, Gary, and Rhonda who took helped us take what seemed like an endless amount of crap out of our condo—AFTER we thought we basically got it all.

Check out our latest video (below) as we reflect on how we made it all happen, a few little freak-outs, and what it's like to travel with a (husky) dog.

P.S. Does anyone know what the issue is with an IPFS error message on @Dtube? We tried uploading multiple times with no success. The thumbnail is the right size and the video isn't above 1GB. All our troubleshooting was fruitless, so if anyone knows the issue, we'd appreciate your insight!

Now the tangerine name makes good sense!

Nice! I drove from Detroit to Mexico last year!
I did a steemit post about it but I only wrote it in Japanese. Check it out here! https://steemit.com/japanese/@chronogn/6000km
Let me know if you want any advice! :)

That's a bit of a drive! Where did you drive in Mexico? We're currently in Mazatlán (we'll be caught up posting our footage on Steemit in a week or two).

We'll check out your post.

From the Detroit to Mexico trip, I traveled to San Rafael Mountains in Sierra Madre Oriental strip.
I've also rented a car in Cancun and drove all around the Yucatan Peninsula before. Mexico is a fun place to venture by car. :)

Looks like you took the opposite side of Mexico as we are. I'm sure we could compare stories about the crazy topes and other random things on the road in Mexico. It's definitely been an adventure to drive through so far.

Wow...must be nice to drive to Mexico...one of my goals to drive to mexico too. Do you need a special international drivers license, passport or any other special pass to go across the border?

How many months planning on staying in Mexico?

No need for special international DL. You need a passport or enhanced drivers license.

Thanks for info Chrongn.... How to get enhanced drivers license?

From my research, you don't need a passport to go across the border into Mexico, but you need a passport or passport card (much cheaper) to get back into the US by land.

If you're staying for an extended period of time, you'll need to get a Tourist Visa. It's good for up to six months and costs about $25 US Dollars. It can be purchased when you cross the border into Mexico.

In order to get the Tourist Visa, you will need a passport.

I'm not familiar with the "enhanced driver's license" that @chronogn mentioned. It's nothing that we have.

Thanks for replying so soon....I subscribed on Youtube and turned on notification....I am cant wait to see what you will share...

I may be following in your folk's foot step to Mexico sooner than I think....this spring would be nice. I have a travel modified van so, I will fix up inside with refridge, and a large sink big enough to sit in it to wash myself. I will wire up electrical boxes....I have bed back there, sleeping bag, transformer, fan, heater, propane tank and heater...wood stove....ready for any disaster too..lol

Awesome, thanks for subscribing! We're excited to have you following along on our journey.

I think the enhanced drivers license is the same thing as the passport card. It's only good to cross borders in North America (Mexico, US, and Canada). It might just be a Michigan thing....
"The Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) is a special driver’s license that allows Michigan motorists to cross into the U.S. when traveling by sea or land from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean nations without the need for a passport or other identification documents. Explore the links below for more information about the EDL and the requirements for obtaining one." http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1627_8669_53333---,00.html

@chronogn is right. You will also need a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP) to drive outside of certain areas of Mexico. We've been pulled over three times already and they asked for the TIP paperwork each time. Gotta have it! They have also asked to see the vehicle's registration and our US drivers licenses as well.

As of right now, we're thinking 3-6 months. Perhaps longer if we really like it! :)

Invaluable info...thanks....You should live there for a couple years...what is the hurry....you folks are young....I packed up left New York City moved to Hawaii and lived there for 25 years when I was 26 years old....I have been living in Arkansas for 3 years and itching to get out of this hillbilly country...lol

I see your driving around in a Prius! That is smart, most economical efficient vehicle their is!! #budgettravel

You got it! And the Prius C (the compact version of the regular Prius) is even more economical. We've been averaging 60-70 miles to the gallon, which is great considering the cost of fuel in Mexico is much higher than in the United States.

It's clear to me now the origin of the tangerine name, long journey ahead, be safe.

Ah dang, maybe we should've left that a mystery for a little bit longer and kept everyone guessing.

Great post really enjoyed it just followed you keep up the good work 👏

Friendly advice to make more Steem....Would you folks up load more photos and videos more per day? This way you would get more upvotes and more Steem $ to help pay for your trip and we can see more of your journey....just 2 videos in 2 days that are similar is not enough info for me, any way.......

We're going to try and up the frequency of our posts in the coming days and weeks. It's the video editing, optimizing, and uploading that takes quite a bit of time. It will probably get easier and quicker as we become better at it.

So glad you're enjoying the posts enough so far to want more! :)

Looking forward to seeing what you will do next.....

Our next video is up if you'd like to check it out!
