Coincidences and hijacking minds

in #travel6 years ago

It is weird how some things work out at times. As you can imagine, living in Finland means that we don't get many visitors from Australia so having my brother and sister-in-law here is pretty special. Today, we are going to go down to Helsinki and have a look around but, we are also going to see a friend of mine who I haven't seen for almost 20 years. What are the chances of the coincidence? Slim but, here we are.

The guy we are meeting is a good friend of mine from university who moved away from the city we lived in a few years before I myself moved to Finland. At uni, we were often in the same courses so often paired up for assignments because we worked well together and could hammer work out quickly without having to argue or worry whether one of us was going to get things done.

There was one assignment in particular that was a debate and the topic was on illegal immigrants arriving in Australia. It was our job to defend them. It was a very contentious issue at the time and my friend was quite strongly against them, so defending required him to take an alternate stand.

We left the prep work until about an hour before the debate (students) but after 30 minutes of research, my friend had changed his mind about them coming in. What had shifted? Wealth generation. He is a finance person to this day but without going into all of the ins and outs, every illegal immigrant that came into the country created on average 3 times the national GDP which means, 3 average jobs. Not a bad defense base.

We were facing a team of four which meant we both got to speak twice. He took the numbers side of the argument and I took the societal aspects. Going into the debate we were classed the severe underdogs because of public perception of illegal immigrants at the time but, at the end of my closing statements we had decimated the other team to the point that two of them left the lecture room in tears. Our lecturer came to us after and congratulated us on a job well done as we had one the audience over so absolutely.

What I found most interesting at the time was how easy it was to change the minds of people who strongly felt one way based on poor information. Within 30 minutes of debate, we had been able to introduce new information to them in such a way that it fundamentally shifted their world view on something they likely never thought could change. in those minutes, we changed the narrative, hijacked their thinking and likely altered their behaviours for the future. Too easily, in my opinion. People don't think too much for themselves so a compelling argument can be all it takes to shift their perceptions. Be careful.

It will be nice to catch up with him after 20-odd years and see if it is going to be one of those, pick up where left off kinds of cases. Except in the case of the two of us both now with families, likely with a great deal less drinking involved. We threw some great parties back then but, those stories are for another day ;)

There is likely going to be added security i Helsinki today for the upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin. How much of the public narrative is going to be fakenews?

If you happen to be invited to meet Trump or Putin be sure to tell them I said hello. Of course both will deny knowing me, they both frequently need my council. Can you imagine a world functioning without my wisdom? That would be a mell of a Hess.

You darned socialist! If it weren't for you, this world would be a better place!

Oh, wait ... there's more to the world than my singular point of view!?! Malarkey! It's my way or the highway!!.....

Well... That's what today's debates are like. You must have found some people who actually can contemplate something other than their own opinion. That by itself is impressive!! :)

Reunions are always sweet and debates are fun! It may be family reunion or friends reunion. Yesterday galenkp was telling that he came to Finland for the family visit. Btw you daughter is looking very very cute in the photo which galenkp posted yesterday. Spend happy happy time with your family😊😊. Hoping to see some of your pics from the day.

Hi Taraz. Good friends don't change and you will just slip back into the last day you saw him. People can be swung quickly if you can think quicker than them.

It is impossible to defend an opinion if it is not yours and you have no knowledge other then what someone else has told you. Its an opinion based on here say and not fact.

immigrant's being good or bad is a settled argument. Immigrant's are a positive for any nation.

Mass migration is a different subject and needs to be discussed without all the bias and BS to solve the problem or problems associated with it.

Until the so called leaders can do this it will continue to be a problem. The problem is not the immigrants, its the leadership failure to do their job without lining their pockets or agenda being their priority.

We have protest here who are calling for the closing of ICE.
The same protestors support the politician who created ICE and does nothing to solve the issue.
Who is the dumb-ass here ?

It amazes me that we live in a generation that literally has all the knowledge in the universe at our fingertips, yet we have people regurgitating things they heard from others as fact instesd of researching an issue.

I had a very wise man mentir me early in my career and one of his favorite sayings was that there are at least three sides to every story: your side, my side, and the truth and it's our job to figure out where that truth lays.

Am also astounded by how people's perception of things are easily swayed. The whole concept of an independent mindset is most likely a mirage, it is only available to a privileged few who fight for it

Wow! That's very grate. Explore the city and meet your old good friend. I wish you guys would team up together once again and produce something that will be beneficiary to your community and the world at large.

Wishing you a fun filled day.

When you guys will meet there will be some trouble to start. I suggest you to open up and talk more about your university memories and unravel yourself .As soon as you get past this first awkward stage , you will feel that nothing has changed in the past 20years. Your friend is the same person , whom you had left 20 years ago.
All the best for your meeting.
