✈️ Travel With The Honeys #12: Jack The Ripper Tour In London, England

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

There are several Jack The Ripper tours in England that bring you up close and personal to how life was back in 1888. Ripper vision was one of the big features on this tour. It was pretty amazing. You would be standing there looking at a doorway or alley where Jack The Ripper frequented, or murdered someone, and you could see how it looks today. Then, they had a little projector and they would project what it looked like back in 1888. It was really fascinating and eerie to be standing there in the exact same place, and learn about the people that lived back then.

This is Lizzie. She was our tour guide. It was a 2 hour walking tour, and Lizzie was FANTASTIC! She was super knowledgable, and of course, she had the best British accent. I could have listened to her for a lot longer than 2 hours. Plus, she kept us moving forward down our journey of London.

I went on this walking tour with friend and fellow author, Anna Dowe. She is the author of the book, 'Bent Not Broken'. She bares all in her book on living with family members with PTSD. It's a fantastic book. This is Anna .....

We headed out on the tubes in London. They are surprisingly easy to navigate. When we got to the white chapel area, there were all sorts of Jack The Ripper shops. People tried to sell us all sorts of Ripper paraphernalia. I had to let them down easy, and let them know I technically was not a 'ripper' fan. I just enjoy walking, and history tours. And of course we can't start a 2 hour walking tour with out stopping for some food first. We had just enough time to grab a gluten free muffin and some tea. This was the cafe right outside the White Chapel Art Gallery where we met for our tour.

I absolutely love the history in Europe, and England offers some fascinating history. Of course, little girls from the US are fascinated with castles and Princes. But, in this area of London, it was originally the slums. It's not so much the slums now, with the financial district sitting right up against it. One of the interesting facts is that the actual city of London is 1 square mile. And it's bordered by these little black, red, and white posts. It is actually, to this day, ran by a different police department than outside of it. Inside the city limits, it's the London City Police department. Outside of that one square mile the police departments are the typical Scotland Yard most have heard of. And this dates all the way back to the Jack the Ripper era. So much so, that one of the nights, he committed 2 murders in one night. One just inside these posts, inside city limits. The rest were done outside. Back then, the police departments didn't communicate with each other. They speculate that it was someone that knew that, because the night he did two murders, it hindered their investigation, because it was two different departments that didn't like each other.

Of course, a lot of the things we heard were shocking. Lizzie, our tour guide, made fun of us for going on a serial killer tour. But, I guess a lot of people are fascinated by it!! And of course, we ran into other Jack The Ripper tours while we were out there!

The Ripper vision was really cool. What was super fascinating about it was just seeing what things were like back then. I wish I had gotten a better photo of it, but, what they called the 'dust houses' back in that day. Prostitutes back then weren't career women. It was more like, they would try to get a bit of money if they were hungry, or if they needed a place to stay. Two of the women were killed when they didn't have enough money to stay in the dust house, and they were kicked out. They hit the streets to try to get 4 pence. It cost 4 pence to stay in the dust house. These places looked like giant warehouses with coffin like boxes in them. And it was rows, and rows of these coffins. People piled into to these coffins for 4 pence a night, and there were literally 100's of these things next to each other. And I can't imagine the bedding in there! Probably ridden with lice and bed bugs. Below is a sample of the Ripper Vision. These photos don't do it justice!

And then there was the letter! This is a copy of the letter that was sent to the newspaper by a person claiming to be the Ripper. In fact, that's how he got his name. They still don't know if it was actually him that sent the letter. There's arguments that make sense on both sides of this fence. They just didn't solve crimes back then the way they can now. They couldn't even take actual photographs of many of the victims because you couldn't point a camera downward back then. That is why you see drawings of them. It was the best they could do! They do have actual photographs, but, they had to stage the bodies, or take from certain angles.

So, this was one of my favorite parts of the tour, and this is the part where a lot of people just say, 'screw Jack The Ripper'. This is where the market scene from Harry Potter was filmed, 'Daigon Alley'. OH YEAH!!

Another interesting location was a charity house that you could sometimes get a free room at. However, it was often over crowded, and you'd have to be there early and stand in line. You can notice that they had separated men and women, by the 'women' sign over the door here.

These next few photos had nothing to do with the Jack The Ripper, just stuff we saw on the way through the tour. I love London!!
