Travel Pro Places of Interest #60: Clifton Graveyard, Belfast Northern Ireland! Part Three (10 photos)

Hey there my Steemit friends! In this Travel Pro Places of Interest Series we focus on specific places of interest for a given location. This may come in the form of parks, museums, beaches, cathedrals, and much more. Always an interesting series and always informative!

Visiting the Clifton Cemetery here in Belfast Northern Ireland was with out a doubt one of the highlights of my time in Belfast. This is simply because I got treated to a private tour by a Catholic Irish man in his late fifties who was incredibly knowledgeable about the cemetery and who was buried there, including some of his friends. What was even more fascinating is that he also took a bullet in the leg from the occupying British Red Coats after throwing stones at them in the 1980s.

This man lived through the roughest times during the conflict between the British, Protestants, and Catholics and sure had some stories to tell. Unfortunately he would not allow me to interview him or even take a photograph as the local authorities still have his name as a rebellious Pro Irish Independence trouble maker. He explained that just on the other side of the main road next to the cemetery is all Protestant and he hasn't crossed the road in over 40 years!

My new friend really made this cemetery come to life for lack of a better term. These photos really do not do justice to what I experienced first hand; but here is a short Travel Pro Places of Interest Series to give you a little taste of what this place was like. The cemetery's oldest grave dates back to the mid 1700s, has a history of body snatching, and also has a mass grave of "several thousand poor" and "They all had names." as the monument states. Now come along and lets have a look around.
