Travel Pro Places of Interest #82: Biakove Cemetary Kiev Ukraine! Part One (12 photos)

Hey there my Steemit friends! In this Travel Pro Places of Interest Series we focus on specific places of interest for a given location. This may come in the form of parks, museums, beaches, cathedrals, and much more. Always an interesting series and always informative!

The Biakove Cemetery in Kiev Ukraine was certainly a place of interest. In all my years of travel I never really sought out cemeteries as cultural places to visit until the last couple years. Not only are they peaceful, quiet, and a bit creepy, they are all unique and reflect the location's heritage and culture.

In this cemetery we get a glimpse of how the Ukrainians bury their deceased. One thing that stood out are the little mini courtyards around some of the graves with a little seat and table. It's like, come have lunch with your loved one. This cemetery had many deaths in the years during WWII and you can only imagine how things ended for these people.

The cemetery was not the best taken care of with large portions of it almost inaccessible due to overgrowth and weeds. Another thing I found special and unique is that many of tomb stones had photos of the people buried there done in marble or some kind of ceramic. I'm not really sure how they got the images so clearly embedded but it seems like they were made to last the test of time.
