The depressed Mohawk Valley (Erie Canal) in New York State in PHOTOS and commentary. RECOVERY? Hardly.

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Welcome Steemian friends. I want to show you an area of New York State near where we lived for many years. Gorgeous Saratoga Springs lies only twenty miles from the Mohawk valley. Saratoga is beautiful, and our home when not in Tucson and now the Tampa Bay area. But nearby is Amsterdam, Schenectady and further west along the Erie Canal is Gloversville and Canajorie. Utica lies a bit further West.

Let's have a look, then some commentary.

Entering Amsterdam, the above is what you see. A former major carpet manufacturer.

Amsterdam is dotted with former glorious homes, many Victorian. Amsterdam flourished in the textile industry until 'outsourcing'. New York's high taxes (and other factors) drove out business.

Above is another Amsterdam beauty. It could be Gloversville, nearby. Gloversville was a glove making capital of the world in the early part of the 1900's.

Above folks, is part of the was incredible General electric of Schenectady , New York, once employer to 35,000 people.
Today GE employs in the same location 5,000. But alas a huge Casino has come into Schenectady near the old GE facility. Ah!! We have economic recovery.

The once booming Schenectady was GE. Imagine the population of this small city, 35,000 once housing this industry.

GE had its own map!

Canajoharie, pop. 4000 was the home to this Beechnut facility. It looks like this today.

Visit Pennsylvania steel towns. I have. The above is a sample of much of New York State from Albany to Buffalo. The New York The Gov. does not want you to see.

Thanks for the visit..UPLOAD and FOLLOW.

A great representation of what the outstanding government of New York has done for the "people" over the years. Sending their tax dollars to Washington and their jobs to overseas. I have seen the steel mills near Harrisburg, Pittsburg, and Eastern Ohio. I've also seen towns like Wilkes-Barre/Scranton that have met the same fate under similar leadership. It's a shame, but the important thing is who can use which bathroom. Better that we debate that. Don't you agree?

You are so correct my friend!!! And just shameful. Much appreciated.

It is so sad to see places that once were at the top and now are having hard times. The worst is that it happened due to government decisions. Sad!

correct..and thnx.

Nice post - didn't realize that parts of New York state have been hit this bad over the years as well. Reminds me a lot of what I saw in eastern Massachusetts as well in cities like Fall River and New Bedford. Unfortunately there are towns and small cities scattered throughout the northern states that once upon a time were industrial strengths for our great country that have fallen on rough scenes like the pictures you shared above.

thanks...this part of NY was the carpet, shitmaking (arrow, etc.) capital of the world..even GE! A disaster..thanks..kind of like Western Pa. and steel.
