The funeral ceremony is basically a manifestation of respect and reminder of the late who had preceded it toward another world. Various traditions are formed to make that happen. No exception, for the ethnic Tana Toraja. They have a very strange and quite creepy funeral ritual.

Home for ethnic Tana Toraja located in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Most of the ethnic descendants are silent and live in Tana Toraja or Toraja Land in the middle of Sulawesi island, about 300 km north of Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province.

The ethnic Tana Toraja adheres to animism, which sees that ethnic other than humans such as animals, plants, and other objects that live and die have their own spiritual essence,
No wonder, if Tana Toraja has a funeral ritual that is quite complicated to do world level. Curious what they usually do to remember their ancestors? Here's the review:

1- Grave Baby In The Tree

The infants of Tana Toraja descent who died before their teeth grew buried in a hole made in Tarra trees. Then, the hole is closed by using woven fibers.

The funeral ceremony is performed simply and the buried baby is not wrapped in cloth, so the baby is still in the mother's womb. The placement of the corpse is adapted to the social strata of the community. Graves also lead to the residence of his family.

The meaning of this burial ritual is the expectation of the birth of babies born after it will be saved. Because, they assume that the baby as returned to the mother's womb.

2- Tau Tau Tradition

Another strange tradition of Tana Toraja is to put bodies into coffins placed in small holes in caves or when their small bodies will be placed in trees. Thereafter, a wooden sculpture of the body, called Tau Tau, will be created. Tau Tau is placed at or near the burial site.

3- Ma'Nene's tradition

Tana Toraja is quite famous for the various strange rituals to honor the loved ones. Ma'Nene is a tradition that takes place in August every few years.

This tradition involves the bodies of those who have died by digging back the grave, bathing, and dressing to be invited to walk around the village. Creepy, is not it?
