Sightseeing with BLBM #11 - Sir Barry Curtis Park, Flatbush

in #travelfeed6 years ago (edited)

Flatbush in the late 1990's to early 2000's was partly being developed, Yesterdays post was about Botany Downs, Flatbush is it's suburban neighbor also was apart of East Tamaki.

Development started with the housing boom in the area one end of Flatbush and the other end of Botany Downs Closer to the Botany Town center, then patch work kinda started with different little area's been done at different times.

Flatbush is still developing with a few farmers just selling big land parcels a few or more years ago, some held out for premium prices some held on due to family history, but with land taxes sky rocketing over the years some couldn't hold on any longer.

Flatbush was among some of the area's that the English Immigrants were given/brought parcels of land about 100+ years ago. It was a farming area were children had to walk long distances to school by foot to Flatbush School which is still there today restored to keep the history, rented out to the public to pay for it's up keep, ran by the council.

Sir Barry Curtis Park

Set on 92ha on old farm land, the walls from the old farm days were still left to reflect the parks history, which was built in 2009 the end date is 2020 as there is a lot planed for the park, there was once in the pipe line a mall with houses on the other side of the park and houses and cafes in the park, not surer if that is still in the pipe line as some of the things like a pool for Botany Town Centre got scrapped which was apart of the planning a university was in the pipe line for Flatbush also, the land is still available to work with but not surer weather that is in the pipe line also.
Needs of the community change or the council realize its not far for people to use other community facility's so people aren't paying for more facility's.

The above picture is a bit of the park, this bit is for the older children to climb, crawl, make sounds on the pipes with active play within a New Zealand native sculpture setting. Just a little bit along is a playground for the younger children with swings, slides etc, and a big climbing web that is quite tall.

Many people ride there bikes, with a few bike days and triathlons held at the park, many groups within the community hold events at the park with it's wide open space and playgrounds for all ages.

How The Park Got It's Name

It was in honor of the longest serving mayor at that time Sir Barry Curtis, he was the Manukau Mayor from 1983 until 2007, he was first elected as a councilor in 1968. In 1992 he was Knight Bachelor for his work within the community.

The Parks Neighbors

The park still has many more neighbors to come, but has many homes, Flatbush's Budist Temple, a few shops.
Further down the road are a few different schools and kindergartens.

House Median Prices

Long gone are the prices of the late 1990's to early 2000's when you would of been able to find a home in the $200,000 - $400,000 range, in 2018 your looking at a cool median of $1,038,950 to buy, to rent $650 weekly median.
