Flüela Pass - one of the most beautiful roads in Switzerland

in #travelfeed5 years ago

Do you remember our trip to Tarasp? After the castle excursion we drove to Samnau which is about 1 hour drive from Tarasp. We were planning to stay there for one night and then head back to Davos. When we finally arrived at the hotel, we were tired and hungry. We had a nice meal at the hotel's restaurant and went to bed.

We left Samnau early in the morning after our homemade breakfast. We could have spent more time in that area but, it was way too cold and there was not much to do there anyway as the winter season wasn't opened yet. We wanted to spend more time in Davos instead. We will return to Samnau in the summer season as there seem to be many exciting hiking trails.

We decided to cross the Flüela Pass to get back to Davos and today I will show you my photo report from this high mountain pass. We didn't do much hiking as it seems that my leg hurts more when it's cold but the landscape there is breathtaking and you don't need to walk much to enjoy it.

Flüela Pass

Flüela Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2383 meters above the sea level. It is located in the canton Graubünden. The road connects the cities of Davos and Susch and it is the most challenging and exciting road that I've ever experienced.

The road is not open all year round due to the avalanche danger. There was not much snow yet, so the road was open 24 hours a day. The pass is usually only open in the evening and during nights as the avalanche danger is low when the sun doesn't shine on the hills.

This is not the only way to get from Davos to Susch (or the other way around). There is a Vereina railway tunnel which operates every day of the year. The train will transport you and your car in about 20 minutes through the tunnel. It is much more comfortable than driving through the Flüela Pass but you will lose the chance to admire all those breathtaking views. If I would ever drive in that direction again, I would definitely drive through the Flüela Pass again. It is worth it!

You should be a good driver to feel comfortable driving there. The road climbs and descends many times and there are too many winding curves and serpentine combinations. Luckily there are many places on the way where you can pull over your car and enjoy the views of the Albula Alps and the Silvretta Alps. Be ready for strong wind and temperature below 0.

What you will see there is impossible to capture on camera, and impossible to describe in words.

Enjoy the photos (I did my best to capture this magnificent icy wonderland😊)

ohhh wow... another place to visit when I finally get over that way ;) ... I still don't see any people, but its ok, I like the scenery just fine as it is :D

Didn't I tell you that I actually own this country? :D Whenever I appear somewhere all people are obliged to leave and go somewhere else :D

Didn't knew about Flüela pass until now but thanks to you now I know and I definitely want to see it in the future. Love the contrast with the snow and the scenery is just breathtaking. I think is perfect for a bike day trip. Saved it for later :) Thanks for sharing Martina!

We didn't see any crazy bikers there but it could be because of the cold. I'm sure that if you would go there in summer you would definitely meet some other crazy people ;)

BUT it is tough and I can imagine dangerous for bikers.. the road is quite narrow and the curves are sharp so I think you would have to be very carefully not to get hit by a car :) Plus the gain in elevation is almost 1 km over 13 km. I'm sure that you can make it.. just sayin' :D

Resteeming this. Wow what absolutely fabulous photos. The contrast of the snowy landscapes against the blue skies is just magical! You have done total justice to the enchantment of the day. What a treat to encounter. It looks like the most amazing place to take a walk.🌈🦋🌴💛🍀

In summer it is indeed the most amazing place to take a walk.. in winter NO :D It was so cold that I could barely breath :) The wind was strong and my hands were feeling like ice cubes :) BUT it was totally worth it!

Thank you for visiting and resteeming my dear :)

Have a lovely day!

The mountains are gorgeous! I can never get such great landscape shots...but I'm just using my camera phone. I'm sure having good equipment helps!

Do you ever wish you were a giant and could just stroll over all the mountains?

Stunning shots as always Martina! Wow, that definitely is a winter wonderland there! I can see from that one shot in the middle how winding that road is. I get nervous driving on roads like that, so @dksart would have to be at the helm for that one. Totally worth it for some of those views, though. Once again you've got me closing my eyes and breathing in that crisp, clean mountain air!

Hahaha, my hubby was driving too but not because I get nervous.. I actually get car sick on such roads when I'm driving :D I have no idea how this is possible but it happened several times already.. we had to stop and change because I couldn't go any further..

The air there was really crisp. So crisp that my hands were feeling like ice cubes after a few seconds of being out of car :D It was very cold. And that wind was terrible. It's that kind of cold that goes directly in your bones :)

Thank you for stopping by, Katie! BTW, do you have snow already?

That's tough to take pictures with frozen fingers! I am sure I would be shocked with how that cold actually feels if I were there.

It actually does not snow too much in my part of the country. The last few winters we have gotten one or two decent bits of snow, but it never lasts long. The bad thing about that is our city is not prepared for it when it does get bad. 4 years ago the entire city was shut down with thousands of people stranded on the icy roads after a storm came in so fast and everyone tried to leave work and school at the same time! It was terrible. My mom had to spend the night at work, my sister was lucky enough to find a hotel, and I know quite a few people who slept in their cars overnight. The rest of the country made fun of us but they just didn't understand how ill-prepared Atlanta is for any inclement weather. Since then if there is even a hint of snow coming everyone runs home because they don't want to get stuck like that ever again!

That being said, I do still like a few snow days during the winter. It just doesn't feel like winter without it! I'm just happy if it comes at a time when I don't have to get out and drive in it. ;)

That doesn't sound good but I understand that it can happen because people are simply not used to snow and they also don't know how to react in traffic if the road is covered with snow. Plus I believe that Atlanta is quite big so there is a lot of traffic anyway. Lot of traffic and icy road is not a good combination.

The funny thing is that similar situations happen in Slovakia too. We have a lot of snow every year but the guys cleaning the streets are always surprised by snow :D Every year they have the same excuse.. there are so many traffic jams and accidents because roads are constantly full of snow..

I also like winter with snow.. And Christmas without it doesn't even feel like Christmas :)

Riding toward the mountains with snow caps on top looks enticing, the steep climb going through the pass you know you are high when trees disappear and landscape become barren.

Love the photo with the plump tree on the mountain, by the trunk it looks to have been around some time, beautiful drive thanks for taking us @delishtreats

Thank you Joan for your thoughtful comment :)

That one is my favorite too. We didn't see that many trees and I liked this one strong fellow :)

Howdy there delishtreats! wow that area looks amazing! The views are spectacular but how do they keep the roads from being icy and slick, do you use salt on them? It would be cool to see some of those shots paired with the same views but taken in the summer.
Hey our internet service is going to be down for two days this week while they work on it and do upgrades so I'm thinking about taking the week off as much as I can and work on project outside here. So if you can the time it could be a week that you could win the League completely in number one, not just the top person under me. If it matters to you, I know it's a ton of work but the accolades are nice.
But anyway, this is another wonderful post!

Hey cowboy, how are you doing? I'm sorry to hear about your connection issues. But hopefully it will be better after the upgrade and then you will be unstoppable 😉 I will see about the comments as I'll have to spend some time on the donation plus I have some appointments this week. But thank you for informing me 😊

It's an amazing place and I've never seen mountains "growing" out of the road. I don't know how they keep the roads clean there but at the high way they are using salt. In some cities they might use the tiny black stones as well. But I guess there is this big truck that pushes the snow on side of the road as well. If there are sources of drinking water in the area then they wouldn't use salt..

Thank you for stopping by 😉

howdy delishtreats! I'm already unstoppable so I don't really need to faster internet speeds for that but it would sure help because this provider frequently goes offline and gets slow, plus my computer is real slow and old. I was hoping you could take it but I guess if moncia 90 does that again then they can take it, do you know who that is or where they're from, by the way? I'm doing great. Winter time here is the best time to work outside so I'm doing some projects outside, we don't have snow like ya'll do!

You are indeed unstoppable :) You computer will explode one day with so much activity, lol. I will see but I really don't know.. as I feel better I started to go to the gym as well and the weather seems to be finally better so I might go out and take some photos with my new camera :)

I don't know her very well.. just sent her 2 comments or so.. It really costs too much time to score well in the league and all those other leagues and I anyway have to shift my focus very soon somewhere else :)

How is the weather over there? What is the temperature?

Howdy delishtreat! So you have your new camera now, how exciting! I bet it's beautiful. What brand is it? Yeah as far as the time spent for the League, for most of us it's too big of a sacrifice. Especially with other important projects and priorities as well.

Our weather is about 11 to 15 C in the winter time for the daily highs which makes it ideal for working outside, that's why I need to get to work! Is it snowing alot there? I bet it's beautiful when it snows with the scenery that ya'll have already like forests and mountains and valleys. Ok, I hope you have a great rest of your week. I think you should go find a castle to photograph! lol.

I stayed with Nikon. This one is Nikon D750 with 24-70mm lens. It is amazing. The photos are nothing like I took before. But I will make a post with photos from this camera next year as I still have some material from our trip to Czech Republic that I'd like to share first.

I don't mind engaging. I actually love commenting but I feel that it's kind of dead here. Recently I don't even get replies from people which didn't happen to me before. So I don't know if my comments became not interesting or if people don't care about responding because they are demotivated. No clue..

That sounds pleasant. We have sun today which is unusual as the last week was horrible. A lot of rain and very strong wind.. no, it's not snowing where I live. We barely have snow.. if we want to see snow we have to travel to the mountains :)

There will be castles from Czech Republic.. I think either 3 or 4 of them. I don't remember and I'm too lazy to check at the moment :D

When is the upgrade going to happen?

howdy again delishtreats! First of all, it isn't your comments that people aren't interested in, it's people not being as interested these days because I have to work alot harder if I want to keep my numbers up. For instance in the League it used to be easy to hit 1200, 1300, even 1,400 comments for the week and last week I decided to try and hit 1,000 and it was super tough, worked like crazy and only hit 1100 because people aren't replying like they did before, generally speaking. It's harder to find those who will.

I had smaller accounts that used to be easy to talk alot to but they're gone, at least for now so I'm always looking for someone that will talk alot which is not easy to find. But according to everyone on here, this is a temporary problem only until prices go back up. We'll see.

You guys don't get that much snow because the elevation isn't very high? I have a hard time understanding the situation there, I just see Switzerland as being a land of snow in the winter time. lol. High winds, cold winds and rain is miserable!

I'm looking forward to those castle photos!

I'm not sure when the two days of shutting down and upgrading is going to be for our internet service, I think Wednesday and Thursday. I'll just know when I lose access! lol. It's in the evening so I won't have to worry about losing posting material as I do that in the daytime.

Wow, these are some awesome scenes here! The thing that I love about Switzerland (especially living in Netherlands) is the mountains, and the fact that they seem to always have snow on them regardless of what is going on downstairs! You really live in a beautiful area of teh world!

I think it depends on how high you go. In summer we went to 2000 meters and there was no snow but we could see summits at about 3000 meters with a little bit of snow. I can imagine that if you go to Jungfraujoch then you will see a lot of snow even in summer :) But you are right, I love it too! It's a completely different world here.. I know Holland very well and I could never live there because I would be missing the mountains too much. I'm lucky that my husband doesn't want to go home (Holland) neither :)

...but the weather and the food are just so good here! (joking...)

I wouldn't think otherwise, lol :D

These are wonderful pictures, I love the country, you captured beautiful landscapes, worthy of admiration. I would love to meet that place some day. Thank you for being someone who shows the wonderful landscapes that our planet has.

Thank you for your kind words! Have a great weekend!

Suisse is truly one of the most beautiful countries in Alpine Europe. One of my aunts lived there for a long time, from 1982 until 1999. She worked at ILO in Geneve. When she retired and came home here to the Philippines, she brought home her Volkswagen Golf. :)

That is a long time. I've been living here for about 8 years and will see how long we'll be staying here :) We live in the German part of Switzerland. I've been to Geneva only once as it's too far away..

That is cool! I'm sure everyone was jealous at that time :)
