Beginner's Guide to Skiing - Day 5 - Chilling at the Lodge

in #travelfeed5 years ago

I've never been skiing a day in my life, until a few days ago. That's what makes this a beginner's guide to skiing. I'm going to start slow and show you the things that long-time skiers forget to tell you. They've become used to it, they don't notice it anymore, or they just don't even think about it.

I'm a beginner.

Here's what you need to know about skiing before you go..

After several days of learning to ski, I'm certainly ready for a break. While my body didn't hurt nearly as badly as it did after day one, I've still got one more lesson coming up. I want to be well rested in order to maximize my learning, and what better way to do that then to spend some time at the ski lodge? While the lodge at Meadows is nothing to brag about, many ski lodges offer exceptional lounging, and the nearby Timberline Historic Landmark is no exception.

From the outside, the lodge is rather imposing. You might recognize it from Stanley Kubricks, "The Shining." The exterior shots of the resort all used Timberline, although none of the interior scenes were filmed there.

During the winter months, there is a lovely covered walk-way leading to the lodge's main entrance. This is well-lit, pleasantly decorated, and optimized for skiers and snowboarders alike, with plenty of places to pause and adjust your gear.

Once inside, you'll see a giant fireplace as the focal point of the room. This fireplace actually extends all the way up to the floor above, with seating and fires at both levels. The temperature near the fireplace is quite cozy and comfortable, although near the walls a chilly draft can be clearly felt.

The walls of the Timberline are covered in all sorts of skiing memorabilia, from old wooden skis to these genuine leather lederhosen! At one point in US history, President Teddy Roosevelt visited the Timberline with his entourage. Special furniture was designed just for him and is currently on display inside the lodge.

There are even areas that look just like museums! Visitors are welcome to sit and relax in any of the comfy seats while learning more about the history of the lodge and the area.

If you still aren't quite sure how to ski, there is a wonderful drawing with thorough notes on exactly what to do. Give it a read and you'll be a pro in no time!

If reading is more your style, drop by the library located on the first floor. There are plenty of books along with old terrain maps and more to learn about the geography of Mount Hood.

We thought we'd stop in to the Blue Ox bar for a quick drink, but unfortunately, it was closed. The door leading to the bar was full of mystery and promise though, so I took a quick peek through. That's Babe the Blue Ox painted on the wall in the background!

Guests can always find a cozy spot to sit and enjoy the scenery from inside the lodge. Somehow, winter looks so much warmer when viewed from inside! We caught the mountain just as the sun was dropping toward the horizon. It gave the snow a definite pink tint.

So whether you are tired from skiing or just want to take a break and warm up a bit, I highly recommend chilling at the lodge. You don't have to buy anything - just rest and relax for a little while. Tomorrow is another day full of skiing - stay tuned for more pics from the top of the mountain!

Happy Travels!

Jennifer

Nice captured @mattifer 😉 the way you take us walking around the lodge really intriguing and what a wonderful adventure you have it here too.

Too bad that the bar was closing and those beautiful blue painting must be amazing too from the cliser look. Anyway... did they provide any coach or trainer to learn skiing there too?

Found your post through @amazingwoman entry post in the pay it forward contest this week and keep skiing 😉

Thanks! Yes, there are ski instructors available, and I highly recommend you Take the Lesson. It's not free of course, but beginner packages are often much less expensive than the normal price.

After my first lesson, there was a world of difference in my confidence and ability.

Many thank to @amazingwoman for featuring me! :-)

You are welcome, @mattifer. :-)

Dear @mattifer,

Woot! Thanks!

The lederhuiden is great in austria they wear them still !

I almost bought a more modern looking pair while I was there this summer, but didn't find just the perfect size. The fit is tough to get used to. They felt so thick.

They say it takes a whole to let them grow on you
The waitresses wear them on the slopes feels holidayishhh

I bet it does. They had some cute ones though! :-)

heres johnny! lol I couldn't resist

I've never been skiing lol it looks and from what you say sounds like quite a gruelling undertaking. Hopefully, I'll brave it eventually

Oh and some great pics too

FYI i found your post via @amazingwoman PIF nomination

It definitely is tough for the first couple days, but it gets easier pretty quickly. I tend to be over confident though, so I am working on going more slowly.

Wonderful winter time story, @mattifer. Thanks @amazing woman for faturing this blogger!

Thanks for dropping by! :-)

Great tour of the lodge. I am sure that is where I would have spent the most time. Snow is always most beautiful from the cosy place behind a window.
I came over from the @pifc feature where your post was featured this week.

Thanks! The lodge sure is nice...but the mountain is where the action is!

I'm glad you dropped by! :-)
