Fireworks in Puerto Varas

in #travelfeed5 years ago

We arrive In Puerto Montt late and we stay overnight at Hospedaje Teresita, where Guillermo, the owner, is very curious and makes us a lot of questions about our trip, but the wife warns us that he is also a little deaf so we have to scream hoping he will understand something! We only stop one night, because we are a little on a hurry, it's time for another adventure: in a few days we have to be in a farm where we will work for about two weeks, in exchange for food and lodging.

So the next morning we leave to Puerto Varas, just after another hilarious conversation with Guillermo. Puerto Varas is not yet the final destination of the trip, but we discover that it is a lively town on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, and compared to the villages of the Carretera Austral nightlife, activities and clubs are all over: certainly we got back to civilization, where buses go regularly and the Internet always works! The streets are crowded and people eat outdoor or take advantage of the lake on a boat trip.

The small town is located at the edge of the largest lake in Chile, Lake Llanquihue, perfectly sited to offer an exceptional view of the volcanoes Osorno and Calbuco, which we obviously can't see because of the clouds that thickle in the sky... but keeping ours fingers :crossed at least is not raining!
There are not many places of interest in Puerto Varas, but there is a beautiful German church, the Iglesia del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus, a national monument that shows the German influence of the city, inspired in its construction at the Marienkirche church of the Black forest in Germany.
We spend the afternoon relaxing, strolling on the lakefront and enjoying the mild climate and a faint sun.

We stay at the Hostal Casa Azul, very nice and quiet. With enthusiasm they inform us that tonight there is party in the village, we have not yet understood for what, certainly a tribute to some saint. So we have a quick dinner at the hostel and we go to the beach, where they told us there will be the fireworks. People are making some annoying noise with a plastic toy trumpet, all are dressed up and wearing a masks as if it was carnival and you can buy hats, confetti, colored ties and soap bubbles in the street. The speakers of a radio entertain us with music, young people drink and dance and involve us in the classic samba train. At some point all the lights go out, all over the houses, the bars, on the street, it is completely dark, and in a perfectly synchronized "ooohhh" begin the fireworks, noisy and colorful as they supposed to be!
