China #18: Culinary delights in Chengdu (1/2) [EN/GER]

in #travelfeed5 years ago

There are two things that you must try on a trip to Chengdu: green tea and hot pot!
Both are landmarks of the city or rather of the province (Sichuan) and should be on the culinary program of every tourist - of course, it is also on ours!
We discovered amazing food during our stay in Chengdu. We would like to introduce you to this in the next lines.

First, there is the Wide and Narrow Alley (Chinese: *Kuan Zhai Xiang Zi), which is very popular among tourists because of its shopping and dining options.
We were only briefly in these streets and had eaten just before- it was still interesting to admire the offered delicacies.
Chengdu_1.jpg

As always, there is a lot going on in the streets.
As soon as we walk a few meters through the narrow streets, we already see the first culinary delights.
Chengdu_2.jpg

From time to time, we also walk past stands with something unusual to offer.

What's this? Rat? Guinea pig? We have no idea…

On the other hand, there are countless restaurants in the mega city of Chengdu that offer hot pots, a kind of Chinese fondue. Unfortunately, we had no specific recommendation and therefore just trudged into some place - the result was a wonderful evening with delicious food!

Various ingredients for the hot pot

Unfortunately, none of the service staff spoke English in this restaurant - not a single word! After a few gesticulations, a kitchen assistant came out of the kitchen and told us in brittle English what they offer.
He was visibly nervous to speak English with us and he said it was an honour for him to help us out.

"We would like some chicken for our hot pot", we said
"Of course – would you like one?"
"No, for God's sake, a whole chicken? Thanks - just a little meat! "

The cooking assistant must have been kind of disappointed when we refused this offer – we forgot that in China the best thing about chicken are the bones and feet!
Chengdu_8.jpg
Not a whole chicken, but at least a chicken foot has made it on the plate!

Apart from "a little chicken" we ordered vegetables and tofu for the hot pot.
Then, we have to get started!

Throw vegetables in the hot pot and just wait

After a few minutes, the vegetables are ready - mhm, yummy!

Our hot pot experience was delicious and funny - next time, we would like it a bit more spicy, in Sichuan style ;-) (when we ordered, we were a little bit cautious about the spiciness of our hot pot)

Another culinary highlight in Chengdu was the visit of the Vegetarian Restaurant at Wenshu Monastery.
That was really a unique experience - it was simply indescribable!

The food, however inconspicuous it may seem, was a pure taste explosion. A wonderful blend of spiciness and freshness, high-quality ingredients - what more could you want?

So, enough talked about food! In our next post, we will take you to a remote tea market ... Be curious!

Kulinarische Köstlichkeiten in Chengdu [1/2]

Chengdu_4.jpg
Was ist das? Ratte? Meerschweinchen?

So, genug vom Essen geschwärmt!
