Hongyadong - A Chongqing Attraction 重庆洪崖洞

位于重庆市中心嘉陵江边的洪崖洞是重庆有名的大型娱乐中心和景点。洪崖洞的前身洪崖门为古重庆城门，已有两千多年的历史。在2005年，市政府把旧城门开发成现在集娱乐，餐饮和住宿为一身的国家4A级景点。

Located close to Chongqing CBD on the banks of Jialing River stood the magnificent Hongyadong, a large entertainment complex and a major attraction of Chongqing. Previously the Hongya Gate of the ancient town of Chongqing with over two thousand years of history, the Hongyadong was built in 2005 by the city council as a major tourism project combining dining, entertainment and accomodation into one single complex.

洪崖洞的最大特色是它巴渝式吊脚楼的多层结构。木身竹顶的楼房依山而建，像积木一样合拼成这个面积二万多平方米的大型景点。此外，因为地型的关系和露天步行街的设计，洪崖洞可以在不同楼层进出街道上，让游客有种空间错乱的感觉。我们从市中心的解放碑往嘉陵江边步行十多分钟，到达了洪崖洞的顶层平台。从顶层的观景台可以浏览嘉陵江两岸的景色和鸟瞰洪崖洞的风貌。纵横交错的小街和楼梯，连接着大小不一的吊脚楼和筑台，一些楼顶上还有中式小庭园，整个景区犹如一个小型古镇。

The major draw card of Hongyadong is the architecture. It was built using the traditional Bayu (old name of the Chongqing region) architecture, using wood for walls and bamboos for the roofs. These Bayu houses hugs the mountain side as they were built, as if hanging from a cliff. These many Bayu houses are stacked in an irregular put aesthetically pleasing to form the Hongyadong complex of more than 20,000 square meters in size. Another interesting thing is because of landscape of the site and the presence of multiple pedestrian walkways in the complex, the complex have multiple street levels – you can enter from the main street from the top, and get out at the bottom into another main street. Entering Hongyadong feels like going into a dimension anomaly and it is normal to feel lost. Walking from the Chongqing CBD we reached Hongyadong via the top floor, where there was a roof terrace with a viewing platform. From here you can admire the beautiful view of the Jialing River banks, as well as a top view of Hongyadong itself. You can see many lanes and steps, connecting different traditional buildings and terraces together. There was even a Chinese style garden on the roof of one of the buildings. The complex is almost like a mini historical city on its own.

从顶楼第十一层，我们乘电梯进入了洪崖洞内部。在九楼我们一转乘升降机到达四楼的步行街。从升降机出来就像走到大街上没两样，可是其实我们还在半空中。洪崖洞的四楼有室内的小巷子和室外的步行街。小巷子里都是大排档式的小馆子，在早中午饭时间为游人提供像毛血旺，重庆小面等可口的巴渝名菜和小吃。而室外的步行街则以熟食和特产为主，贩卖着灯影牛肉，火锅料，各类的米糖和米糕，还有各式各样的辣椒。步行街上还有槌麻花，手工米粉等表演，现做现吃。

From the 11th Floor, we took an escalator inside a complex, followed by an elevator all the way down to the 4th floor, where the pedestrian street is. Stepping out it looked as if we were on the streets, even though we were technically still in the mid-air. On this level, there are indoor lanes that were lined up with small hawker style restaurants selling famous Bayu dishes during meal times, as well as a outdoor pedestrian street that sells local produce and snacks, such as hotpot chilli oil, beef jerky, rice cakes, and an assortment of chillies. You can also see demonstrations in front of the stalls, such as the hammering of sesame sweets or local chef making rice noodles. You can enjoy this while you tuck into the various foods and snacks on sale here.

步行街尽头的园林观景为洪崖洞八景之一，洪崖滴翠。洪崖滴翠是指吊桥后的天然瀑布和岩壁，早在清朝时期就已成为著名景点。可惜我们没有找到吊桥入口，没办法近距离欣赏这名景。

At the end of the pedestrian street travellers are treated with a beautiful view of a Chinese Garden. This is one of the “Eight Views” of Hongyadong known as the Hongya Drops. It is a native waterfall and cliff behind the suspension bridge that has been a well-known attraction of the area since the Qing Dynasty. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the entrance to the bridge and so couldn’t get a closer look.

从四楼可以用楼梯步行或乘坐升降机到二楼，洪崖洞底层的主入口。在这里终于可以欣赏洪崖洞的全貌，的确十分壮观。十三层的吊脚楼像个空中楼阁，古色古香的楼房配上大红灯笼和园林景色很好的演译着古典的巴渝风情。

From the pedestrian street you can get to the official entrance of Hongyadong on the 2nd floor via the stairs or the elevator. Walking out from the complex we could finally admire the architecture of Hongyadong as a whole. The thirteen-levelled building perched on the cliff side like a hanging garden, and the wooden buildings, red lanterns and the Chinese gardens perfectly showcase the traditional culture and style of the Bayu region. Very magnificent.

虽然洪崖洞不算是个历史名胜，但它特别的设计和迷人的江景足以让洪崖洞成为重庆首屈一指的景点。有机会的话，记得入夜后再来游览。不但能够享受更多的美食，还可以欣赏吊脚楼灯火通明的壮丽夜景呢！

Although Hongyadong cannot really be considered as a historical attraction, it’s special architecture combined with the beautiful river view makes it one of the must-see attractions in the city of Chongqing. If you have the chance, try to visit Hongyadong after dark. Not only would you would be spoiled for choice when it comes to food, you will also be able to stare at the beautiful night view of the complex as the lights come on. It’s truly amazing!
