Welcome to Travel Adventure #8! Today we spent the morning at Surin Beach, shopping and exploring the Phuket Weekend Market & Thalang Road Walking Market!

Today's Itinerary

  • Buffet Breakfast (I'm such a piggy)
  • Daily Thai Massage & hot tea
  • Relaxing and swimming at Surin Beach in the morning
  • Shopping at Central Festival Shopping Mall
  • Phuket Weekend Market - biggest and most famous in Phuket
  • Thalang Road Walking Market

Mornings spent eating, relaxing and beaching (like a whale after eating so much)

Our morning started in the usual way with eating a delicious breakfast at the resort. We then picked up our towels and swimming gear and walked across the road to Surin Beach to relax (while our bodies digested our breakfast) and jumped into the ocean for a quick swim.

Funny story though - I need to wear prescription glasses and since it was a nice and sunny day I wore my prescription sunglasses to the beach. I always forget that I'm wearing them (since I need them to see normally) so I walked into the ocean water with them on and while we were taking our token tourist photos while standing in the water we were taken out by a wave. When I resurfaced from the water my sunnies were nowhere to be found so I was prescription sunglasses-less for the rest of the trip.

Note to self: remember to remember to take off sunnies before going into the water.

Lunch then Shopping at Central Festival - BIG Camera Fuji Battery

After being wiped out at the beach by the waves and losing my glasses, we spent some more time relaxing and taking in the sunshine. We headed back to the resort to clean up and had some lunch before making our way to the shopping centre.

We kept running out of battery for our FUJIFILM so we decided to hop into a GRAB taxi to the Central Festival Shopping Mall. It was a very large and airconditioned shopping centre with a wide range of stores to choose from over a few different floors. We didn't spend much time here as we wanted to head to the markets that were starting soon. So we made a beeline for the camera store to purchase a spare battery.

Once we finished, we could actually see the Phuket Weekend Market in the distance. The traffic was very busy at this point so we decided we would walk there as it didn't look that far (keyword "look"). This was a BIG, BIG mistake as it was so humid and hot and turned out to be further than it looked. We were beating the tuk tuks most of the way to the markets but I would much rather have been sitting in the back of a tuk tuk.

Phuket Weekend Market & Food Everywhere

We finally arrived after walking for what felt like forever. The weather was warm and humid and we worked up a big sweat walking all the way from the shopping centre but we finally made it to our first market for today. We arrived early afternoon shortly after 4PM so it was relatively quiet at this point in time before the crowds really started to build up later on.

We made our way through the markets trying various foods - including various grilled meat skewers, Thai fish cakes (delicious!), mung bean sweets, sweet buns (like doughnuts), fried crickets and some sugarcane juice. We also bought a few souveniers for ourselves and to take back home for family and friends.

Too scared to try these. Whatever they are

We were only brave enough to try the fried crickets. Just crunchy little protein morsels

I'd never be game to eat these foods - I recognise intestines, some sort of tongue (from an ox?) and ears

Was surprised by this bucket of off-cuts. Don't even want to know if this goes into a meal to eat haha

Thalang Road Walking Market

The Thalang Road Walking Market is located on the main central road in the colourful and charming Old Town of Phuket. The market is held every Sunday night and was very, very full when we arrived after coming from Phuket Weekend Market. The narrow street was brimming with people walking slowly along this beautiful street lined with colourful Sino-Portugese buildings (mix between Chinese & Portugese architechture). This market offered many food options but vendors sold many hand-made trinkets and souveniers and there were many musical performances from the locals to entertain visitors.

So proud of you. Keep up the awesome work! Wooohoo

Every day I'm hustling. do do do do doo (music beats)

I've heard good things about Thailand when it comes to their food. Aja! Hopefully, I can go there soon!

I absolutely love Thai food. Waiting for my Thai friend to take me to Bangkok one day so I can get the full experience. Hopefully, you can go sometime soon as well!

I might go next year! I so love Bangkok and looking forward to get the best vacation ever. lol (I'm just exaggerating). I'm experiencing Thailand without going with your posts so it's still supah fun. ^^

Don't blame you going back for the meat skewers they look delicious, along with all the veggies and fruits, what a beautiful place to explore.

Bet you found your food by smell, since you lost your glasses LOL

Beaches look so inviting, looks like you had a wonderful trip @supernovastaffy

Lucky I didn't lose my normal prescription glasses (only my prescription sunglasses) otherwise I would definitely be making my way around the markets by smell alone haha. The trip was amazing and it was great to visit Thailand for the first time.

Thanks for the look at Thailand. I have fond memories of my visits there - brought back the travel bug.

I know! It's always dangerous to look at travel blogs because it gives you that itch to travel again. Well, it's a good thing but there are just too many places to explore in this world of ours it's just so hard to choose where to go next.

Thank you for commenting and for reading my post! it's greatly appreciated

Really interesting posts! I followed you, since I like to learn something new everyday here on Steemit.

Please come and visit my foodblog, too!

Thank you for dropping by @foodart and for your support! It means a lot

It's crazy how much street food is able to be found. As for the beach it looks incredible!!

Aisles and aisles of street food it's so hard to choose what to eat. The beach was very relaxing and much quieter than other beaches in Phuket, which we were thankful for.

Oh wow, I think the worm like looks like grubs. And yes crickets do taste like little protein morsels when I didn't realised and accidentally tried one. Urgh!

The last picture in a bowl... the flat out spiky ones "that looks like a yellow carpet" looks a lot like cow stomach... however I do not know what those balled like intestines are... maybe... they literally are balls ?

I have been to Thailand twice; one in Bangkok and another in Chiangmai. Never get to visit other places including Phuket. Thanks for the sharing!

upvoted

Yes, I agree with you. Some sort of giant grub but I'm definitely not brave enough to eat them. Hahaha we only tried a few crickets. They don't taste so bad as they were more of a "crunch" rather than being "meaty" but it's the thought of eating them. They're just not something that I would go out of my way to eat haha, but had to try so I can at least say that I've eaten them before.

I think the "yellow carpet" is stomach as well and the balls... well definitely testicles. I just had to take a photo when I saw them hahha. Hoping they don't get used in a meal though. ughhhhh

I haven't had the chance to visit Bangkok and Chiang Mai but it's definitely on the (very long) travel bucket list.

Thank you so much for stopping by!

haha! 😀 one image you have here is dragon fly and wood worms. Those are nice to eat as they have loads of protien.

Some of those image you have are really scary, like the pig intestine and chicken butt😋
I have tried the wood worm before.
They are crunchy. But the Dragon fly feels yukky...

Enjoy reading your post. @elvielins

Thanks for letting me know. I'm guessing the woodworms are the fatter ones? And dragonflies are the skinnier ones? I bet there's heaps of protein in them but I can't even think of actually eating them haha. I'm abit squeemish when it comes to these things. Only brave enough to eat crickets as they are small and just crunchy with no squishy meat.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting! 😀

Great photos!

Thailand is lovely :) Following for more
