🦗 5 STRANGE FACTS ABOUT INSECTS + TASTING! DID I MANAGE TO EAT THEM ALL?

in #travelfeed6 years ago (edited)

Foodevening Steemians!
This time at Naka market in Phuket I wasn't looking for snacks, but bugs!
I found them and decided to eat them, and at the same time I wanted to share with you 5 strange facts about them!

In Thailand worms are quite a popular treat, you can compare them to our chips. They are fried in deep oil with a mixture of spices and sauces.

One, quite large portion costs 20 bth (0.25 STEEM), and the mix to try costs 50 bth (0.63 STEEM).
They are available in many local markets and, quite surprisingly, they are very popular among tourists.

I managed to find 5 different species and for each of them I prepared a separate fact. I also publish a short videos for you in which you can see how I eat them.

And now let's have fun!

#1

Our body is not adapted to eating worms. So when we try to do this, the brain can send a signal to the stomach that some kind of poison is approaching. In this case a defensive reflex will take place and we can "return" our snack.

#2

More than 1,500 worms species are classified as eatable. This includes larvae, crickets, beetles, spiders etc.

#3

Feeding with worms is called entomophagy, and an aversion against them is called entomophobia.

There is also a fetish associated with worms, which is called formicophilia.

People who have such a fetish feel excited about worms - they are stimulated when bug touch their skin with his feet, crawl over their bodies or even enter in some of it spots.

From 493 to even 907 grams - that's how many worms we unconsciously eat in a year! Most of the time they reach our stomachs with food, but a large part of them is eaten by us while we sleep. Worms attract heat and moisture, so our lips seem to be the perfect place for them.

#5

Worms are a great source of protein - they contain almost 80% of it! 100 grams of worms contain average about 53 grams of pure protein! Bear Grills knows what's good!

In addition to protein, they contain iron and B vitamins (B1 and B3). Health itself!

I hope you didn't eat anything during the reading and you enjoyed this article! :)
Let me know in comments if you have ever tried worms and what do you think about them?
And if you haven't yet, I wonder if you would like to try it if you will have an opportunity?
