Cityscape Photography. 'Brisbane.'

All the images in this blog were captured from the picturesque Roma Street Parklands in the heart of Brisbane, Qld., Australia. This wonderful oasis is only 10 minutes from the CBD and I often take the train from home to spend a few hours absorbing the beauty of the sprawling lawns, designer gardens the variety of flowers, birdlife and eastern water dragons who are all very much 'At Home' here.

The Roma Street Parkland caters for many events throughout the year and it has proven to be a very popular place to visit, due to facilities such as free barbeques, playgrounds and a variety of places to sit and relax......or to take photos as I always do especially as the vistas change with each season and flowers are always being pulled up and replaced with new, seasonal ones.

Guided tours are availabe throughout the Parklands where many hidden secrets are revealed. It is a great place to have a picnic and any office workers in the nearby buildings head for this area to recharge their batteries and have a bite to eat before going back into the grind.

The Parklands cover an area of 16 hectares and is very close to the Brisbane Transit Center and the Roma Street Station. It has the distinction of being the world's largest subtropical garden in a city center.

Attractive walkways and paths traverse through the recreational areas to gushing waterways, rocky outcrops, themed gardens and a mini rain forest area.

It is a haven for many birds and this Noisy Miner bird is attracted to the scent and pollen of these pink snapdragon flowers.

I often see magpies, magpie-larks, galahs, rainbow lorikeets and blue faced honey eaters flitting and flying around the park.

For thousands of years this area was used by the local idigenous people to conduct meetings and ceremonies.

Here is a strand of Queensland Bottle Trees (Brachychiton Rupestris) surrounded by shrubs and orange Kangaroo Paw flowers. The Bottle Trees are members of the Malvaceae family and native to Queensland, Australia and can grow from (10 20 meters) 33-66 to ft tall with trunks measuring up to (5-15 meters) 49 ft tall.

The restaurant/cafe at the top of the gardens serves delicious coffee, snacks and meals.

The view is spectacular, overlooking the gardens, lawns and apartments in the distance.

It is not unusual to have Eastern Water Dragons cross your path when visiting the gardens. They freeze when people come close which gives amateur photographers like myself great opportunities to take a few good shots.

The bigger dragons are a little more intimidating but I think they are more wary of us than we are of them.

The flower gardens never disappoint. I love the splashes of colour everywhere and can appreciate just how hard the landscapers must work to keep the 16 hectare property beautifully maintained.

The greenery is equally as appealing. Roma Street Parkland area was part of the orignal Brisbane settlement and in 1875 a terminal station was constructed. This created the main western link between Ipswich and Toowoomba. This terminal proved to be vital during World War 11 for transporting war material and the military further north.

Construction of the current Parklands began in 2000 and was completed in 2001.

The open air amphitheatre (formerly known as the Albert Park Amphitheatre) holds plays by the Queensland Theatre Company, the Q'ld Shakespear ensemble and other theatre groups as well.

Orchestral concerts have also been performed here and The Lord Mayor's Christmas Carols plus Brisbane's Carols by Candlelight concerts were held at the Albert Park Amphitheatre before the now extremely popular Riverstage was built at the City Botanic Gardens.
