'Melbourne Pedestrians.'
(This is my entry for the #TravelPhotoContest organized by @lightcaptured.)
Where would we be without pedestrian crossings? It doesn't take much to imagine the chaos in the heart of a highly populated city with its inevitable bustling traffic, impatient drivers and vast numbers of pedestrians all needing to get from A to B without the assistance of traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.
We had only one day with which to cover as much of the center of Melbourne city as possible (most of it on foot,) so time was of the essence. We'd planned every square inch we wanted to cover and estimated as best we could, how long our trek would take, but when one (meaning me) wants to capture as much as she can on camera, this slows the process down considerably.
And I have to admit. I'm a menace in a crowd when taking photos. I'll stop without warning, not wanting to miss an interesting scene or a particular detail and have been known to cause a 'people pile up' on occasion.
Which leaves me at the front of the pile, up attempting to protect my camera and regain my balance as arms, legs and bodies unceremoniously return to their owners and attempt to re-route. This activity comes in handy because it prevents me from seeing the frowns and hearing the sighs of those who have been caught off guard by my lack of concentration.
In between shots we pounded the pavement with a purpose and I'm happy to say, I managed to capture many memorable photos without getting lost or run over or ending up in the Yarra river trying to get that tricky, almost impossible capture before returning home.
This capture is a scene which incorporates high rises, buses, cars and pedestrians but also the magnificent St. Paul's Cathedral, which took eleven years to build and was consecrated in 1891.
(All images captured with a Panasonic DMC-FZ70 camera.)
