Tree Tuesday - Mexican Calabash Tree!

in #treetuesday6 years ago (edited)

Well as always Thailand never ceases to amaze me i have again found another weird but fascinating tree. This i found in a beautiful manicured garden park in Bangkok so this tree is a long way from home it is known to have come from Mexico is why they call it the Mexican Calabash Tree.

I do think the Thailand government must have hired someone to go and find all these unusual tree and import them into Thailand i have never seen so many different trees in Thailand. This tree is actually from the Bignoniaceae family and it's Binomial name is Crescentia Alata Kunth Fruit Tree now that is a mouth full.

It is not a big tree by any means it may grow up to 8 meters tall but fans out beautiful providing nice shade very ideal landscape tree with it's long spreading crown of branches. It's fruit grows ever of it's trunk giving it a beautiful appeal and the fruit flower itself is very appealing as well when the tree is in full bloom before it fruits the flower on the tree are like a cup shape it's a yellow greenery color with red or purple veins running though the flower.

The fruit itself while it looks like a huge mango well that is my interpretation they call it a cannonball like fruit it grows to about 7 - 10 cm in diameter it has a hard smooth shell that is hard to break into more or less like a coconut but they say that the inside of this shell there is a pulp which has many additives that are used in the medical field such as for anti-inflammatory , headaches , coughs , colds , toothaches and these are only some.

The shell of the fruit is quite useful also it is use to make drinking cups or bowls the shell cut in half marks two drinking cups or two bowls. In Thailand this tree is called "Monksbowl Tree" as Buddhism monks used the half cut fruit as a bowl. Now we know why this tree has been imported to Thailand...Haha..to funny.

That is a nice looking tree, here in Costa Rica some people used to keep their water stored in those fruits. I'm glad you like trees.
