TreeTuesday - Holm oak acorns

Did you know it's possible to eat these acorns!?

Ok, there are still green, but when it turns brown and start falling, it's time to pick them. Pigs love it and so do I!!

All oak trees produce acorn, but holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia) acorns are the preferred by pigs and also by humans, as they used it to produce flour and then delicious bread. This tradition got a bit lost in time, but I know a local producer in Alentejo that is recovering these old habits, and using holm oak acorn in a lot of products, like coffee, bread (my favourite), pate, and so on.

The above photo shows how holm oaks are pruned in Alentejo region, where a large tree top is privileged to provide shaddow to livestock and because it allows a wider distribution of acorns on the ground for the pigs.

This is my submission to #TreeTuesday @old-guy-photos.

Cool bit of history. Holm Oak is a beautiful tree.

Thank you! Do you have holm oak there too?!

No to cold in winter. Wish I could grow them. The evergreen leaves and egg corns are a delight to behold.
