Shzuoka Jazz Street Festival
As we were walking to the station to catch the train for Yugawara festival this weekend, we spotted this festival in Shizuoka, so we explored it for a bit.
If I compared this festival to the other free music festivals I've been to in Japan, this one would be very small and disappointing. Odawara music street and especially Sendai Jazz Fest are fantastic.
This one in Shizuoka only had 3 stages, compared to about 15 in Odawara and about 45 in Sendai.
Where this festival excels though, is in the indoor jazz performances (which I didn't see as they were in the evening and I wasn't there that evening). You can buy tickets for 500 yen and this enables you to gain entry into any of the many, many live houses and bars around the city to catch performances. That's a pretty good idea, I thought.
We saw a little of the outdoor stage in the middle of the day which was too hot. Then we went to the indoor free stage which had air conditioning and watched one set before heading to the station. The band were pretty good and there were quite a lot of people there too eventually.
All in all, if you like jazz and are around in the evening, this seems to be a pretty good festival. I'm looking forward to seeing more of it....next year....
