Burial Tombs inside the Rock Mountain

When you come near Demre in Turkey, you must make a visit to the rock tombs dug along the slope of the mountain.

You can actually park outside the site and walk to the mountain for a visit.

There are lots of Roman artifacts lying on the ground at the entrance.

There are scattered fragments of columns on the road side.

Here in the middle of the road, you see details of reliefs of the image of Medusa.

This site is so impressive. These rock tombs look like houses, don't they?

It tells you a lot of how ancient people in the upper class buried their dead.

Imagine the hours they spend in building these chambers for the burial.

We can look inside the lower ones that are near the road.

Look at the shape of these tombs.

They reflect the Lycia architecture of that time.

You can see this one decorated with a rich relief of a feast which has similar motifs in Etruscan reliefs and frescoes.

They don't allow you to walk in. But it is close enough for you to see the amazing work done on these tombs.

For the lower rock tombs, there are paved roads for you to peek in for a closer visit.

But the ones that are higher up are incredible. The higher the tomb is, the higher the status of the deceased.

We can only view them from afar.

Take your time to look at the carving done to the tombs. These people are so creative.

We spent a good afternoon here. This is a must! This is really one of the best-preserved necropolis in Lycia.

Enjoy,
Rosa

Very cool! It reminds me of Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, but there it is dwellings not tombs.

Must be cool at the park in Colorado since they are really homes.

It's been many years since we were there but I recall it being neat to see.

It's amazing just to see from your pictures how beautiful the carved rocks are. This is something you don't see anywhere else randomly. I would love to visit this place one day and experience it myself.
