IDENTIFYING YOUR OWN DIFFICULTY STYLE

ake a moment to look around your office. You may notice that people you work with display a variety of different personality styles, values, and temperaments. Teams with a mix of personalities can be both productive and motivating, but they can also experience clashes and disharmony. Think about it. You probably prefer working with some of your colleagues more than others.

It's important to realize that your preferences stem from your own temperament, personality style, and values, not theirs. Unless you understand the relationship between your own temperament and the way you perceive others, you'll probably waste a lot of time expecting others to change.

It's better to focus on identifying your own personality style and the preferences that affect your feelings about others. When you recognize your own preferences, you can moderate your behavior to work better with other people. One way to do this is to examine four main personality types and discover which category you belong to, and which category the people around you fall into.

The first personality type is called Dominant-Controlling. People who belong in this category can be described as fast-acting, outgoing, bold, and assertive. They like challenges and they can get impatient with people who are slow or indecisive.

The second personality type is known as Analytical-Obsessive. People who exhibit analytical-obsessive behavior are methodical, logical, and detail-oriented. They like perfection, and have trouble making decisions or letting go of anything that isn't perfect.

The third personality type is Expressive-Impulsive. If you fall into this category, you're likely someone who can be described as enthusiastic, people-oriented, optimistic, and social. You may like motivating others, but probably have trouble with details or follow-through.

The final personality type is called Skeptical-Negative. People who fall into this category are more interested in what is bad than what is good. They complain, whine, and at times behave like a victim. They pull people down instead of raising them up. They can also be quite adamant and opinionated in their views.

So which description seems most like you? Which description fits that difficult colleague of yours? When you know which category you fall into, you can take steps to adapt your personality and temperament in different situations. This should help you have more harmonious interactions with difficult people.
