The 1996-97 Champions League was the 42th version of this tournament, and the fifth season where the name of the tournament was changed from “European Cup” to “UEFA Champions League”. It was held between 11 September 1996 and 28 May 1997.

24 clubs competed in the tournament. 61 matches were played with 161 goals scored. An average of 2.64 goals per match.

Four clubs were able to qualify to the semi-finals; Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United, Ajax, and Juventus.

The final game of the tournament was held in Olympiastadion, Munich, in 28 May 1997 between Borussia Dortmund and Juventus. The German club was able to win the the final game 3-1.

It was the First European title for German giants and champions Borussia Dortmund.

“Milinko Pantic” from Atlético Madrid was named the top goalscorer of the tournament, scoring 5 goals each one of them in the 1996-1997 UEFA Champions League.
