The Storm in Northern Italy - Aftermath

in #ulog5 years ago

I thought to write this post days ago, but I've been too distracted with this crazy piece of land we are trying to buy! SO nerve wracking! Let's see if it becomes reality!

But, you might have heard about that we have had a pretty serious storm here in the north of Italy, and I want to share a bit about that!
A couple of days before we had this extremely strange weather, with a hair dryer type hot wind coming from nowhere! It was really strange. And then a couple of days later started the rain and the cold wind!

The storm started sunday night and monday morning we woke up to the changed scenery!

Here are some of the photos that has gone around social media. I know some are taken by the volunteer fire corps, but some are author unknown.

That collapsed road is the main road to get in and out of the Primiero Valley, and the valley was actually cut off from the outside world for 3 days. Now the road is fixed and up and running again, and many things are already back to normal. The man in the car that fell in the hole also survived without major injury. And my friend who was pregnant decided to get out of the valley the day before the storm so she could get to the hospital, which she did and gave birth to a beautiful boy two days ago!
But trees don't re-grow in a day, and I am really sorry to see all those thousands of fallen trees...
There has been fear that whole mountain sides would collapse and bring landslide to the village in the valley, but luckily that hasn't happened and the weather is back to being calm again with just a bit of light rainfall.

Personally at our house we escaped without major damages. Some roof tiles fallen off and a little outside roof went flying. It hit the little pear tree, but I think it will be fine! The neighbours big Willow tree fell though, and a small apple tree of the other neighbour. And that wooden hay barn I wrote about in my Previous Post .

Glad you are all fine and the road is reopened. We've been having big plow winds blowing thousands of trees down flat close to where we live. I had lived here for over 25 years and had never heard of them before but now it seems to be hitting different areas around us almost yearly! One was real close - the next road over that went through my neighbors yard, she watched it through her window, luckily it took a turn before it hit the house. They seem to pick up speed in open areas and there has been more and more deforestation happening in this area. Auh! When will we ever learn that forests are more valuable standing then clear cut for lumber or burnt and slashed for farming!

Yes I don't know. History has seen civilisation after civilisation collapse because of deforestation. And I think you are right that the storms become more violent due to wider open areas with less trees. I think almost all ecological problems can be traced back to deforestation. Forests are life! I wonder if this civilisation will understand before it's too late..

Unfortunately in this part of the world - the boreal region of Canada it has gotten worse. It's all about the money but the money will be of no avail when our ecosystems are destroyed.

Good luck with your property!

And what a mess. Thanks for sharing pictures.

Aww the fallen trees are breaking my heart, poor things 😢

That's a scary storm. Is this the same one that crashed all the yachts? This is the storm I heard of from your country.

Uh, didn't hear about the yachts, but if it was in Italy it must have been. Around Venice or somewhere? That's close to here...
Yes it's been quite destructive so news would have gone out over the world. The people that has lived here for generations never so so much damage from one storm before.
