Making Cold Brew Coffee At Home

Why cold brew?
Coffee is extracted very slowly over a
long period of time during the cold brew process. The amount of acidity and bitterness is less compared with non cold brew way. In cold brew you get an overall smoother flavor and a much higher caffeine content.

To have a good quality cold brew coffee you should have good quality coffee beans. You may use your favorite beans or a locally sourced, freshly-roasted coffee. Some says older coffee is better so, I just leave the choice to you.

There are two different methods for cold brewing. Just use the same gram consistency and same ratio of coffee to water. First prepare to grind the beans. Start by grinding one and a half cup or 80 grams of coffee beans. The consistency should be relatively coarse. You then add it to a half gallon container or mason
jar. Set aside.

Method 1:
Immersion Cold Brew
This method creates a more rich and
smooth flavor.
1.) To the coarsely grounded beans, add 6 cups or 1400 grams of cold or room temperature water.
2.) Give it a good stir
3.) Put a lid on and put inside the fridge from 12 ( light brew) to 24 hours (
stronger brew)

Method 2
Hot Bloom
The hot bloom produces a slightly
brighter and more full bodied coffee.
1.) Essentially the same with method 1 but only add a third of your water which has been heated up until steaming hot (not quite boiling but around 205 F.)
2.) Stir to hydrate the coffee grounds and let sit for one minute no more no less.
3.) After one minute, immediately add the
remaining four cups of water make sure the water is cold.
4.) Stir and put a lid on. Put inside the fridge from 12 to 24 hrs.
5.) Remove from fridge and strain

Strain using:
fine mesh wire with cheesecloth over it or
use a pour over with a filter. It will take time to strain be patient.
After straining your base coffee is ready for use. Put a few ice cubes on a container. Pour some of the base coffee. Add milk. You're done.

Ingredients (makes 1/2 gallon):
1.5 cups (80g) dark roasted coffee beans
(Ideally espresso beans)
6 cups (1400g) water.
You can adjust the ratio and
increase the amount of coffee if you want a stronger brew.
