Dear Everyone,

I wake up today with no water on the faucet. I thought that it was just some pranks from the jerks in our neighborhood. Hence, there were times that prankster's shutdown the main valve at our water provider's stub-out. So, I asked my sister, "Is there a water service interruption?". I got a nod from her, affirming that there is.

Over the past weeks, the water running to our faucets are lesser. Water service interruption were more frequent. Water reservoir level were declining rapidly, as what is in the news. Right now, daily heat index in Cebu are between 30-40 degree C. There were no recorded LPAs or monsoon to bring fourth rains. Refilling our water reservoir is out of reach.

If this continues, "are we gonna hit the critical limits of our water reserves?. Right now, no. Hopefully, by June the rainy season comes in, refueling our water reserves.

This is and was a perennial problem. I was taught that earth is 70% water. If the data were true, why could we utilize so little amount of it? I know that only 2.5% of this water where purely potable. What could we do to increase the amount of potable water?

I was contemplating on: "Why not use seawater?".

Drink a cup of seawater...

If I would ask you, "would you drink a cup of seawater?". Literally, I am sure that you'll say no. The saltiness of seawater makes it none potable. If I could take out the saltiness, would you now drink it? I am not sure if would you drink it. But, this would be down to the potability of such water. By removing the salt in seawater, we could come up with a fresh water that is potable.

The process of removing salt in water is called desalination. Could this be the answer of the water crisis? Yes, I think it may help a lot.

In desalination, the seawater is heated to steam and then condensed to make the freshwater. However, the actual process of converting seawater to freshwater is more complex. There are other process to take place before the actual desalination such as reverse osmosis, filtering, etc. The You may watch the video to learn about the whole process.

Sorry, I could only tell that much about the process. I am no expert on this field. If you know the technicalities and intricacies of such system, feel free to write a comment. I would appreciate it.

Would this solve the water crisis?

Yes, it could solve the water crisis. By extracting seawater, we could be able to retain some of the freshwater deposits from our grounds. There are countries doing it, such as Spain and Israel. A video below shows an operating desalination plant.

Could we not do it here in the Philippines?

I am positive that we could do it here. But, when? I do know. I think the large cost of building this infrastructure hinder us to build it the soonest. At the same time, the framed views of the current water concessionaires, water service providers also hinders it. Currently, the Philippines rely on water sheds and reservoirs behind dams. The government program where focus on building roads and bridges for easier commerce. No one is solving these pressing concern of today.

A radical change is needed. More openness to new technology in providing potable water may turn around the current water crisis. I hope it is happening in the future.

The seas has more water than what is in the ground. I hope we can make use of its abundance.

What are your thoughts? Feel free to comment and give this a vote or a resteem.

Oops! The water containers I was filling up for reserves are already full.

I must go. Have a good day!

That wasn't much,
