Ulog #3: Observing On How To Overhaul The Engine of the Ship

in #ulog6 years ago

Good day Steemians ! So here I am telling to you this day what we observed in overhauling the new arrived cargo ship in the Shipyard. Then this is my third time that I post my entry in Ulog and I found that this kind of theme of blog is great and very wonderful. The creator of this is really smart and has a great mind. Thanks you so much sir @surpassinggoogle. So let me start now.

This is my 20th day in my OJT and I don't know what kind of task that we will be doing this day but I'm still excited because I'll be having a new knowledge or learning this day. Then we arrived in our workplace and the chief engineer told us that there is a new arrived ship yesterday and it is need to be overhaul and he also told us that we must see first the new arrived and wait for him to come before we enter to the engine room.

This is the new arrived ship, the SF Beacon or Seaford Beacon. This is a cargo ship and every two year they overhaul the engine always so that they will replace the old parts to new parts because there are some parts not functioning well or defected if it is used for years so it must be overhaul to avoid some accidents. The chief engineer told us that this ship is a very old model but the chief engineer say that we will be just observing to the apprentice on what they do because some parts of the engine are too heavy and there are about 10 plus apprentice in the ship to perform the overhauling of the cargo ship.

That open door that is the entrance and exit of the engine room but we didn't get inside directly and we decided to stay outside because we are waiting for the command of the chief and also it is still no apprentice inside performing the overhauling.

Then the chief engineer is already in the ship and we follow him to the engine room. This is the engine room of the cargo ship. Actually there are 4 apprentice who assigned to remove the piston and that is on the top and there are about 6 apprentice below who assigned to get the rocker arm. Then there is one apprentice in the top who always get the parts that they removed. As you can see in the picture, the parts are not still removed because they are loosening first the bolts. There are some bolts that are hard to loosen because they really tighten hard the bolt in there last overhaul of the ship. Then there are some bolt they can't loosen it because it is really tighten hard and they waste about one hour in loosening the bolt in the exhaust tube. So they decided to melt down the bolt using the acetylene. That silver tube with a big diameter that is the exhaust tube of the engine.

As you can see in the picture there are two colors of the tube. The blue one is the line for for fresh water with a mixed of coolant which is used to cool the engine and the red one is line for the fuel. We are also helping to get some of the parts that they remove just like the rocker arm and the exhaust valve cage because we wanted to help and try to lift the some parts if it is really heavy.

The first part that they remove is the line tube for the fresh water and the bolt of this part is just easy to loosen because the number of the bolt is 7 to 10. Then the line tube for the oil which is the smallest tube and the line for the fuel which is the red one. The next part they removed is the rocker arm. In the top of the picture with a color of green and with a triangular shape that is the rocker arm and the last part that they removed for this day is the exhaust valve cage. That bottom part of the picture that is the exhaust valve cage. Then in this part start the hard part to loosen the bolt.

This is now the look of the engine after removing the some parts. If you notice, only few parts that they removed this day because it is not easy overhaul an engine. The bolts are tighten hard and it takes 4 to 5 people to loosen a no. 14 to 20 bolt. I realize this day that the job of a marine engineer is not that's why we help even it's just a little help. They stop in overhauling in the part that they removed the exhaust valve cage because it is already 4 o'clock in the afternoon and they are also tired and sweaty. The engine room is really hot because they didn't used the vents of the ship and I really don't know the reason. The overhauling of the engine will just continue tomorrow and I'll just post y tomorrow.

That's all for today and I hope you enjoy reading my Ulog entry for this day and I hope you learn something on my blog and thank you so much. I would also like to give thanks to @surpassinggoogle for having this kind of theme for the blog and you are truly a great great man sir.
