Hêh đúng rồi 😂

Your thoughts are good. But I do not know about Kung Fu.

It is said that all martial arts have origins at the Shaolin Buddhist Temple in China. Buddhist monks are supposed to not kill any living beings, so why would they practice martial arts? The story says that Bodhidharma came to the Shaolin temple but was rejected, he then started a 9 years meditation in a cave. Impressed by this stunt, the temple allowed him to enter. Bodhidharma noticed that a lot of the monks were falling asleep during their meditation because of a lack of physical exercise leading to a weak body. So he came up with some exercise and taught them to the monks: the 18 Arhat Hands of Shaolin. Those exercises became the base of the Shaolin Kung Fu, they were to improve physical strength and balance while promoting energy management.

In Chinese, Shaolin means the little forest. Back then, it was not rare crossway with thieves, outlaws or even wild animals. So learning martial arts is also a way for the monks to protect themselves.

Being born in a Buddhist temple also forged the martial arts philosophy where you should only use the martial art as a way of self-defense and only as last resort because all life is to be respected.

I didn't know that, thanks for sharing. I was going to comment and decided to read comments first and here you are explaining it.

I haven't heard of that style of Kung Fu either, glad it's working well for you.

the ukulele king @quochoy, this is amazing, how long you been attending the classes? I'm guessing not too long, but yet you've educated people about ulog with this input, this is amazingy friend it's well written

Just a little bit more than two months. I believe that anyone has the ability to teach a little bit about something they just learned. What ever your level is, the one that is at a level lower than you can always benefit from what you know. So you joined a class just one day ago? Then you know more than someone who hasn’t joined yet and you can reach home something.

I didn't mean it that way buddy honestly.

Hey mate, I wasn't upset at all 😄don't worry.
I was just trying to explain my belief and share it with you 😁
I want to see more people sharing and teaching what they know. Because I see a lot of people being shy or being scared that they don't know enough to teach and educate others.

Thank you again for your singing and ukulele playing on the weekend at @surpassinggoogle's Talk and After Party, @quochuy. Your voice has a clarity of spirit that is very fresh and cleansing.

And Thank you for this #Ulog. Very interesting day.

I also wanted to do an inner-based martial art yearssss ago. Did karate for awhile but preferred the energy approach rather than 'force'. By the time I heard of someone who taught an inner style here in Jamaica, he'd either stopped or migrated... don't remember, it was so long ago.

I've always promised myself that whenever I'm living close enough to a school or someone that teaches an inner technique, I'll go, even if I'm 187 by then. ;)

The thing is even external styles requires mastering of the inner energy to be successful. The high ranked karate masters use a lot of inner energy but it takes years and years to get to their level. I think that the physical training at the beginning is more a kind of conditioning of the body to get you healthier.

In traditional Wing Chun, at least at the various schools I've been, it's always focused on the relaxed state of the body. We never do physical body conditioning (running, push ups etc...). So you need to do your own gym on the side if you want that.

With Wu Xing Dao, in this school, we do those body strengthening exercises but the martial art itself requires relaxed movement.

I've found these schools:

All true.

Interesting to know, @quochuy.

Thanks so much for finding those martial arts schools. I started Tai Chi years ago and eventually stopped when I got pregnant with my first child... 21+ years ago. Never did start back. Did karate either before or after... don't remember now. Despite all this, I made sure both children earned their black belts by 12 and 11 respectively. ;)

Not sure why but haven't been thinking of Tai Chi as an 'inner' style but it is. Hmmmm....... That would actually be a good fit to alternate with yoga every week when I finally decide to get going. Thanks! Forgot all about Tai Chi and I already know the teacher. ;)

Tai Chi can be both a gym but can also be taught as a martial art. All depends on the school. My school teaches the martial art version of Tai Chi.

Wu Xing Dao...my Chinese is a bit rusty but is it "5 Star Way(s)"? I guess it's because it combined different arts into one. Seems like these days people don't have the commitment to follow the entirety of a single art and just combine this and that from several arts.

Hi there. Thanks for the comment ☺️
Wu Xing means shapeless, Dao means philosophy (often translated as way or path).

That's true.
Some of the theory I've heard is that in this modern age, the art of fighting is way different than before. You could end up in a confrontation with someone who's really good at grappling and would lock you down if you don't know how to handle it. Bruce Lee himself came up with the concept of Jeet Kune Do where he believes we'd better learn many styles, keep what works for us and reject what does not.

Learning multiple styles also allows one to adapt better in different conditions. You could be injured during the fight and not be able to perform a certain move from one style but can compensate with something from another style etc...

The Shaoling Kung Fu itself is a combination of many styles: the monkey style, the tiger style, the praying mantis style etc...

In the end, it's not the style that is important, not style is better than another, it is about the practitioner.

Ah, I see. I was thinking "Wu" and "Xing" separately. :P
True it's good to know more than one style of combat. I'm more of the traditional mindset of choosing and commiting to an art and doing it well.

Nothing wrong about that at all!

I congratulate you, it is good that you are willing to help others, and if it is true that when we receive visitors is the only way to get to clean the house.
