Ulog3 A trip to the marble city, many thanks to @surpassinggoogle for giving us @ulogs

in #ulog6 years ago

It was the last day of the week and I was anticipating a weekend of relaxation, footballing activities and other regular things like chores. I never thought i would be accompanying a friend of mine who was on a journey to his home town for a cummunity project which he had been assigned to execute.

Just like a tourist on tour. I was really happy to visit a new place that I have never been to before and was also eager to find out things that made such a town special.

The journey took approximately two hours from our school.

It was the first time I saw a mountain not on a tv set yet it wasn't just any mountain., it was the famous 'Iya mopo mountain' that I had heard of...It was so long that I couldn't see an end in sight and before I knew, I was in the ancient town of igbeti.

Let me do a little introduction.

Igbeti is an ancient town located within Oyo State, Nigeria. Noted for its richness in mineral resources such as limestone and especially in marble.

The town is mostly dominated by mountains and hills with the human population of about a few thousands by my guess.

The town also has a game reserve.

Igbeti is also known as "Marble City" for its rich marble deposits.,foreigners described the marble as the best in the world.

This ancient town is also called ‘Onile oye’ (the land of winter) gotten from its endless cool weather and coldness even in the summer times.

Iya Mopo and Agbele Rock are the two most visited sites in Igbeti. Iya Mopo Hill, the highest hill in Igbeti, was once used as shelter against attacks. Agbele Rock is a naturally formed statue said to depict a mother with a load on her head carrying her child strapped to her back.

Legend has it that this rock was formed when a woman stole some yam from a rocky part of the village which was being dried in the sunlight and became a permanent rock formation ever since.

Other noticeable mountain are the 'Oke Okin' and 'Baterugba'. Igbeti has a total of sixteen huge mountains scattered across the land.

the town derived the name 'Igbeti' which literally means the town that had refused to be conquered by enemies.

Another view was that the name was generated when a famous old hunter of the land was asked whether he would continue hunting and he replied 'Mo ti pa gbe ti' (I have put a stop to hunting).

The last view of the name formation was that when people began to settle in the town, the saying was 'Fi igbe ti e ti si bi' (Settle down here).

Due to it's mining activities, igbeti has a good road network with limited vehicle use and a constant power supply but a few borehole due to its marble deposition making drilling hard and expensive.

The people of igbeti land are hospitable, hard working and generous. I was treated to a treaty only kings deserve.

It was a fun filled trip and a place I would love to visit again in the nearest future.
