ULOG #12: Morning RidesteemCreated with Sketch.

in #ulog6 years ago (edited)

This may be a little early to be posting as I may head back out to ride again. It's only 4 PM here. I'm really enjoying this nice summer weather as we are approaching the start of fall in a few days. I mean I still can enjoy riding in early fall as the weather cools, but I just really love the summer warmth. I managed to get off to an early start around 10 AM. I met up with @pizzamergency (I'm calling you out so start blogging) at Cafe Taza as usual. I just quickly drank a coffee to get some energy before we headed out.

We cut up to Plymouth Avenue to head north to the start of the Riverwalk bike path. Plymouth is my favorite cut through street to get through the West Side to Forest Avenue. I just hate to ride with anyone unfamiliar with it as most of the stops are not 4-ways, which is unusual for the neighborhood. It's too easy to assume cross traffic has a stop sign then suddenly realize you do not have the right of way before it's too late. You actually do need to stop at these intersections to make sure nobody is coming.

From the end of Forest we went north on the Riverwalk. This portion is nice for riding as there is not much foot traffic to contend with. The bad side of this path is also the very reason there isn't much foot traffic. The entire neighborhood has been cut off from the river by a highway, leaving only a few places to access the river.

After the Grand Island bridge the riverwalk goes through Isle View Park and Niawanda Park. THis is not a fun to ride as there are a lot of pedestrians, many of which do not stay on the pedestrian side of the path. We eventually cut over to the parking lot as there were few cars anyway.

We were both kind of hungry. I didn't want to spend a ton and really was in the mood for anything so we went to Mississippi Mud's, a seasonal burger and hot dog joint. I got the turkey burger. Sahlen's hot dogs are a local thing. Most people who grew up here would never eat hot dogs from national brands. Sahlen's is a little different but Wardinski's is another local one that is an acceptable alternative. They have a rooftop patio, which is a great place to eat as long as it's not a windy day.

From here we cut over to head south east on the rails to trails through Tonawanda. It only opened a couple years ago and has become quite popular. Because it's so wide, the heavy pedestrian traffic does not actually interfere much with cyclists.

We stopped at Delaware Park for a water break before headed to Wegmans. I didn't need anything but @pizzamergency got me a kombucha. Thanks! It's made locally by Bootleg Bucha.

From here we took the Scajaquada Creek Trail to West Ave. Like Plymouth it's a good short cut through the West Side, except this is one-way south while Plymouth is one-way north. This is better because they are all way stops and there is less traffic. I went home, thinking I would need a nap, but I think I'm ready to eat and go for another ride!
