ULOG #9: Buffalo Bike Party Hometown Pride RIdesteemCreated with Sketch.

in #ulog6 years ago (edited)

Hey it's been awhile. I hope I can start writing a little more regularly again. I had to sort out some personal stuff. I think I'm feeling better to start sharing my days and rides with everyone again.

I help organize the Buffalo Bike Party which rides on the second Friday of every month. Each month features a different theme. Yesterday's theme was Hometown Pride. While most people wore shirts representing Buffalo, people were encouraged to wear clothes represting what ever city they grew up in. I found an old Buffalo Sabres shirt made sometime in the early 90s before they started experimenting with different jerseys.

The photo below was taken by another person at the bike party (C.S.), not me. I'm in the photo, in the center.

This was a unique ride. We kept the first two stops kind of short so that we could make it to our final destination on time. The ride was also shorter than usual. We stopped for about 20 minutes each at the square in front of city hall and the amphitheater at La Salle Park before heading to Curtain Up! to see bands play inside and outside the local hostel.

Curtain Up! is the coolest festival that most everybody here is completely unaware of. Most of the people on the ride had never been there. In its 37th year, the festival marks the beginning of the theater season. All the theaters in town have plays that night. It's a big black tie gala before and during. Most people probably think that is all it is and that you need a ticket. You do need them for the plays, but when the theaters let out at 10 PM our downtown theater district turns into a huge outdoor street party! There are bands and other artists all up and down this quite long block of Main Street. It continues until 1 AM.

The best part is that the hostel has bands play inside while the plays are happening, then has their own outdoor performances at 10. And this one is all free. No tuxedos and fancy dress are needed. There is great music for all. I caught the Bear, which led everyone outside while doing their "super bowl dance."

Next up was Space Cubs, which is Suzanne Bonifacio, from Buffalo now based in Charlotte, NC. This was awesome. She performed with two other musicians. but I believe the name refers to her music, but I guess to the band as well? I've seen her once before and it was great both times. Here is a video clip below.I wish I had shot more but I accidentally stopped it before the song was done.

I wandered around a bit before heading home. This was a unique bike party ending at one of my favorite annual events in Buffalo.

Duuuuude that's the most active city in history of active cities history. It's like everyday there's something happening!

Remembers a lot the days I loved in the capital here, a lot of outdoor events.

Winter lasts so long we need to have all the fun we can while the weather is warm. But even in winter we will find stuff to do.
