Today my son and I stopped off at a local home center to kill some time before an appointment at the free school. I wanted to look at the mulch selection, and figured he could kick around in the other areas, seeing what’s good.

When I had decided on the type of mulch I wanted, I walked around the corner to see where Z-bee had gone, and what he was up to. He was staring pretty intently at a little potted plant on the shelf. When I approached, I saw that it was a tiny “Venus Fly Trap”!

So, needless to say, we bought it (it was only about 5 bucks) and returned home. While Z was at his play date at the school, I fed our new friend a couple ants. I hope you’ll enjoy the short video below.

Oh yeah, before posting that. The Japanese name for this plant is ハエトリグサ—“haetorigusa”—which, literally translated, means something along the lines of “fly grabber grass.” “Hae” is “housefly” or “fly.” “Tori” is “take,” or “grab.” And “kusa” (the “k” is replaced with a “g” in the full word for ease of speech) means “grass” or “plant.” Pretty neat, eh? Here’s the video:

Thanks for stopping by!

haha cool plant! I need it but I've never seen them here
now you're free from all flies around;)

How’s the garden coming along?

It’s not too bad. Have been eating some beans and carrots, and working on watermelon, corn, pumpkins and cucumbers now. A whole lot of work. But fun.
