September Homeschooling Miscellany

One of the things about not learning in an institution is accepting that the stuff taught and learned in institutions isn't the grand authority on all that's worth learning. I know this, but sometimes I don't really know it. Like on her day, @pixietrix said she wanted to get her nails done.

My immediate response was "pick something educational".

I'm not sure why mouths sometimes just randomly fire off before engaging the logic part first as not only would it make a lot of things so much easier, it would probably also make the world a better place in general. Pixie has spent a couple of years studying makeup artistry, nails were part of that, so we would learn how nails got done professionally. Also, I got her to research the nail places at the shopping centre we were going to in order to get some idea of prices. As it turned out none of them had prices on their websites (which is really annoying) so we had to do actual legwork.

Pixie settled on a place with reasonable prices and we learned how nails were done.

She wanted me to get my nails done with her but as it's totally not my thing I just ran my battery down playing Pokemon Go and steeming while waiting for her.

This month also saw the start of dance rehearsals (the first session was actually end of last month but I managed to miss that date as it was listed at the top separately from the list of the rest of the dates.

We hit up the zoo with Nanna, Pop and 2yo cousin as the dinosaurs were back. I was a bit dubious about going in on a Wednesday as previously that was the cheap adults day and it's usually packed out but they don't seem to be doing that anymore and while it was a little more crowded than usual probably due to the dinosaurs it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

As there were no cassowary chicks the cassowaries were more chill.

What feels like ages ago but isn't that long ago in the grand scheme of things, one time when I took the kids to the Perth Museum, 9yo, who was then 3 or 4, encountered a moa egg and screamed "BEEEG EEEEGG!" When he noticed one of the cassowary information signs he had a moment of "WHOOOOOOAAAA!"

The toddler was apparently scared of the really big dinosaurs. Meanwhile Pixie (who was doing the activity sheet) found a good use for her brother.

A little bit of time was spent in a dinosaur-themed activity centre set up in the picnic area

Sometime was spent at the playground and in the drumming hut where the boys managed to make up a pretty decent beat together:

Age and the psychologist visits have seen @shadowlioncub come in noticable leaps and bounds now as his patience and attention span have vastly improved. Previously he would have just merrily bashed away at the drums doing his own thing. Here the boys were actually looking at each other and coordinating the drumming to work together. The zoo wasn't as crowded as I was expecting but still busier than usual and normally Cub would have started melting down, but he lasted for quite a while and was starting to get stroppy by the time we needed to leave anyway due to the parking running out.

There was more making stuff out of boxes with @gorc's old Makedo kit:

The various connectors of the Makedo kit also got used as currency in a game the boys made up. The small blue things were "bluedallions" and six of them were equal to a "nail" (the long things) and I can't remember how many of those equalled the hinge or if the hinge was an item they were trading. But they had this elaborate trading game going on involving currency and item exchanges.

States happened with the bigs being on two different days (which was an improvement over last year where they were on the same day but 11yo was on in the morning and 13yo was on in the evening). For the first time since level 3, Pixie was on first thing in the morning so we had to get up earlier than we were used to.

Pixie got a silver on beam, Gorc got silver on rings, gold on parallel bars, silver on pommel (which he was mildly surprised about I think as he doesn't particularly enjoy pommel and refuses to pendulum swing higher even though he's now plenty flexible and strong enough to do so), gold on floor and second all around.

Cub has decided he wants to be a Dtuber, and we then had to imaginatively work out a setup that was going to work as I currently don't have an external drive for the sp4 and as it turns out from Pixie trying previously it can't seem to cope with OBS anyway (which is slightly bizarre as Pixie seems to manage fine on her Macbook Air which I'm under the (probably incorrect) impression is close enough in hardware specs).

It worked out all right and we discussed the kind of setup he'd need to be able to get his mug on the screen like he's seen some of his favourite Youtubers doing, which is going to require money, which he decided to try to save up for possibly with help from the Dtube videos...except the iPad is currently short on space so we can't even export the iMovie project out to something that can be transferred onto my computer to post. So we're going to have to figure out something else there too.

Meanwhile because he was otherwise enjoying making videos his sister made a guest appearance in the second video doing a reaction type thing to playing the game he played in the first video for the first time.

We currently still haven't quite figured out a way to get the actual videos off the iPad, it may require some additional hardware, but we'll get there eventually.

This post also appears on my blog.

@gorc, @pixietrix and @shadowlioncub are each 33% beneficiaries for this post.

Thanks for looking! ^_^

I hate trying to figure out the digital/computery side of things, so I don't envy you trying to help your cub through that. I get my eldest to do it for me or teach me what to do!

Don't you just love the early competition starts, when everyone's still half asleep, gymnasts included! Izzy went to national clubs last week and we had to be at the airport for 4:30am... 😩😪 I got back in bed as soon as I'd dropped her off.

Oh totally XD I was giggling at this comment and told it to the other gym parents and one of them was like OH YOU ONLY HAD TO DO IT THIS ONCE and one of the other ones regaled me with tales in a not so recent past where she had to do three 4am starts per week for a while x_x

That airport run is insane, that would be shuttled to my partner as even though I could be up and moving about I'm not actually awake at that time of morning D:

How did Izzy go, was she awake enough?

Luckily she didn't actually have to compete until 8am the following morning, so they got an early night.

I was talking to a gym mum who's other daughters do swimming and she was saying how one has reached the stage of extra hours and starts 4:30 Wednesday mornings. After she'd finished her full conversation On the different days they were training my only reply was, "what time did you say she starts On Wednesdays?" And she replied, "yes, you heard right!"

Looks like another adventurous and eventful day in the fyn family :D.

Homeschooling really makes the family closer together because of the time that you spend time together, which is really quite priceless. And everyone looks like they're having fun as well :).

Month! We couldn't fit that much chaos and carnage into one day :D

It does, but it's also possible to spend too much time together, fortunately they can all separate and do their own thing easily too. Where some of our "fun" is happening right now is them learning when they need to split off and have some alone XD

We do mostly have fun on our outings, I just have to be careful with the small one and how many people there are, more people in less space means less time :)

I was homeschooled and loved it. I had a tutor, as opposed to my parents doing it, but whenever I wanted to try something, like this, I was usually told something like, "well how is nail polish made? What is it's history? When was it first introducted?" And then I'd have to research it and we'd discuss and it would lead to other things like new books to read etc. This was all PRE internet. Today it would be easier and possibly cooler to do research with my tutor, bless her heart.

Ooh another one, I've met a few people who have told me they were homeschooled when they find out I'm homeschooling :D and so far everyone has said it was a positive experience, I hope my kids think the same when they're adults!

Sometimes I can go more in-depth with them with such related questions but there are many other times when the shallow dip is all they wanted to know and they simply don't care about the more in-depth stuff and get annoyed when I push it XD These days I just make the usual suggestions and if we look further into it then yay if not well I have to try and find other things, but generally I've taught them research skills, we're still learning how to appraise sources, they can read and understand what they're reading and do maths and they're mostly interested in finding things out so far as I'm concerned most of my job is done ;D

Pixie is so pretty

are your kids mixed? hahha am so nosey :P

Thanks! I think so too but I'm thoroughly biased XD Yes, yes they are, and extra mixed as my parents are mixed as well XD My grandparents and beyond I'm less sure about, I was doing research and then I got distracted. Maybe one day when I'm rich enough I'll hire raven to help me XD

we're all somewhat mixed to some degree anyway right

eta can't remember if you've seen this one but this is a very rough sketch of what they had to work with XP

Ah the life of a homeschooler, so many interesting ways to teach and to learn when you live outside of the box. Your kiddos are adorable. It's crazy how fast it goes. My daughter just moved to South Carolina with one of her older brothers (my stepson), we just got off the phone- so sad that the days of One Direction concerts and Supernatural conventions are in the past :( She expressed this thought and now I just have to come up with something else cool we can do now that she's 'adulting' ;)

Why do they have to be in the past? :D You can still go to concerts and conventions, though if One Direction and Supernatural are what's in the past just go to whatever is interesting now ;D

You'll come up with something cool and fun to do now :)

And yeh I'm getting old and feeling the fleetingness, next year all the kids will be double digits and the big two will both be high school aged, so no more "little" kids x_x

Cool, looks like everyone is having a good time, thanks for sharing, cheer.

Awesome! Great job, Cub! I'm glad he's making leaps and bounds with regard to improvement. Are my eyes deceiving me or is Cub on pace to be bigger than Gorc?

Where did Pixie's girly girl side come from if not from you?? Latent JJ genes? Speaking of JJ, Magic the Gathering has entered open beta! He doesn't need to settle for his old game. I hope you all decide to sign up and we get matched up without knowing it. My handle there is jedau as well, so you'd know haha

Thanks! We're all glad too, it's been helping everyone with everything XD And yep he will definitely be bigger but probably not taller.

I'm blaming lateral inheritance from JJ's sister, coz it's sure as hell not from either of us or my sister XD I've told JJ about the Magic thing, he seems to already know about it but he doesn't play a lot online. Told him what your handle was so he'll know if he gets matched up against you now XD I haven't even been playing PokemonTCGO lately so Magic has buckley's.

Well done Gorc .... obviously talented. I do not think I would come close to being able to home school my children. I have a low 'people tolerance' threshhold ... needing me space even when there are only two of us.
