Recycling Pallets, how to build a cheap fence pt2.

in #upcycling5 years ago

What a glorious day, the sun is shining birds are singing and the rain has f*cked off, well, for a little while anyway.

2 days ago I made a start on my garden fence by dismantling pallets, you can read about this if you follow this link

Today, was a perfect day to continue with the fence and I got to work with the wood that I had from the pallets that I had taken apart.

Every part of the fence was built by pallet wood, the only thing that wasn't was the screws that I had left from another project.

The wood that I was using for the fence post had to be treated, and if you are following this project I advise you to do the same.
pallet wood is a soft wood and isn't treated, when wet it swells and this mean that it can rot very, very quickly.

There are many wood treatments out there, I used some I had laying around from a job I did, this would normally cost about £8 for a small pot of paint.

I used a brush to put it on the fence, you can do the same, or spray or roller it on.

I haven't got enough paint for the whole fence but enough to do the posts as they need doing as they will be sat in soil, and soil contains moisture which means they will be at more risk than the rest of the fence.

The next thing you have to do is to use some string and make a straight line so you know where your fence is going to go, once you use the string it makes it easier to know that you are digging holes on the same path and the fence will be straight.

I started to dig the holes and using the wood that I had as a gadge I could dig the holes where I needed them.

Using rubble that I had around the garden I added this to my concrete mix, this wasn't to add any extra strength to the posts, but more to get the rubble out of the garden. :D

I sank the posts and covered up with soil.

using the thicker wood these made the two vertical posts for the fence panels to attach too, I wanted the fence to be straight, and using a spirit level and a piece of wood I was able to keep my fence on a nice steady level.

It was then just a case of cutting down the wood panels and screwing them to the vertical posts,

It took 4 pallets to make this fence and there is two halves to it, there is also enough wood to make a gate, which I am going to have to buy some hinges, and lock to go on it too.

All in all it took about 4 hours to get to this stage, i have got to add some more fence treatment to it as I have run out but I think it looks great don't you?
