The Tale of Nutmeg the Dog

Meet Nutmeg

Nutmeg is a Husky / Shepard mix with a heart of gold. She is precious sweetheart of a little girl that can melt your heart with her doey eyes and warm snuggles. She loves hugs and kisses and is very sensitive. She holds a very special place in our heart. She has a sister named sugar that lives with us and I will be sure to tell you all her later. Today I want to tell you about Nutmeg because she had an operation and could use all the love and support she can get. Here is her story.

Looking at her now , you would never guess that she started life in a cage drinking from a tire in the middle of the desert. But that's where she came from. That's not to say that she was being abused or mistreated - but she was living the life of an outdoor dog as many of them do. She was born to a full blooded Alaskan Husky - a beautiful dog with all white coat and close to 100 pounds. Her father was German Shepard/ Pitt Bull mix. A large dog of about 150 lbs, her father was a hunter - and chased down rabbits regularly to eat. Nutmeg and her sister Sugar were put aside for us while the rest of the litter was given away or sold. She came home with us and became part of our family when she was about 3 months old.

Nutmeg loves traveling and like many dogs enjoys putting her head out the window to see and smell all the action. She hasn't always had her car legs - for the 1st year of her life - she couldn't even travel for 5 minutes without her losing her lunch. We had to learn to not feed them anytime close to traveling in the car and also learned to travel with lots and lots of rags and pet stain remover. Eventually , she was able to travel further and further - and she finally graduated when we traveled from Washington to California with out any incidents. She's now a seasoned traveler now and loves to go with us on the road.

Her last trip wasn't very fun for though. We had to take her the doctor for a surgery. She had a torn ACL ( a knee injury) From what I can understand about it - the ACL is like a rubber band in the knee and once it is broken - it can't be fixed or replaced. We don't know how it happened, but luckily there is still hope for her. They do a surgery where the doctor cuts out some of the leg bone, the turn the cut piece around and screws it back in with a metal plate and some screws. It sounds very scary, but the doctor we went to does several of these operations a week and is very familiar with the procedure. The worse part was that she would have to stay overnight - the first time she had eve been away from her family and especially her littermate Sugar. It was very traumatic for her to be separated , especially when she didnt know why and had a bunch of strangers poking and proding at her.

This is what her leg looked like right after the surgery. Because of how it looks , I started called her "Lamb Chop" as it looks like she has a lamb chop sticking out of her....Although I was excited to see her, she was mad at me for leaving her in the hospital overnight and didn't give the loving greeting I was expecting from her.Instead, she gave me the cold shoulder for a while, but ultimately, her loving nature couldn't be restrained for long and she warmed up to me before we left.

It's been two weeks since the operation and she will be recovering for the next 6 weeks and so far she is doing really great - but she's not out of the woods yet. Now that she is feeling better, it's tough to keep her off her feet. She is eager to play and is already starting to put pressure on her foot more and more. The Dr. said that this was OK so long as she doesn't run or play - which is really hard for her. She gets her stitches removed in a week and her wound looks completely healed already, even though it still needs time to heal on the inside.

Here she is relaxing by the new firepit with her littermate Sugar. Her wound has been healing quite nicely and we are able to let her spend a little more time out of the house. As her time outdoors has been limited - she relishes every moment she can get outside. We look forward to a quick recovery and can't wait for her to be up and running on all four legs again.

Thank you all for taking a moment read about our precious Nutmegan - please pray for her speedy recovery

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

It was very traumatic for her to be seperated , especially when she didnt know why and had a bunch of strangers poking and proding at her.
It should be separated instead of seperated.
