The Seven Years's War saw the end of French power in North America. By 1763 more than two million British colonists were living there. These people now wanted to be able to govern themselves. Britain, however, had different ideas about her colonies, because they were an important market for trade. A large British army and naval fleet was still staioned to protect North America. The British government was concerned about who was going to pay for these forces. The answer was the colonists themselves-through new and increased taxes.
