Requirements

To complete this tutorial learners will need to have the following:

  • VCV Rack installed on a Mac, Windows or Linux computer
  • 21kHz module pack installed on VCV Rack
  • Fundamentals module pack installed on VCV Rack
  • Core module pack installed on VCV Rack

Difficulty

This tutorial is at an intermediate level.

Description

This tutorial explores how to use Tachyon Entangler module. The module contains two oscillators which function together to give you an interesting Frequency Modulation sound source.

Learn the general function of the Tachyon Entangler module

The two oscillators Tachyon Entangler provide a wide variety of sound possibilities. Oscillators A and B act as Master and Slave respectively. Both have Chaos and Sync controls as well as FM and each provides different results because of the Master/Slave relationship.

Learn how to manipulate pitch

The module provides standard pitch control with Octave, Coarse and Fine. It is important to note that the pitch control alters the pitch of both oscillators uniformly. With this constant pitch across the oscillators we can make use of the Ratio control in an interest way. We will look at that closer later.

Learn how to manipulate Frequency Modulation for A and B oscillators

Both A and B have Frequency Modulation voltage control inputs in two formats: Linear and Exponential. Again, due to the Master/Slave relationship the making similar changes in either A or B will result in very different result. I encourage you to explore this for your self. Both VC controls (exp and lin) will produce different results. The math behind both these are based on and exponential and linear graph which I have explained in depth in other tutorials. Play with these to hear and see the differences.

Learn how to use Chaos and Sync functions

Chaos introduces varying degrees of randomness into the oscillations. This results in noise.

Sync is a probability selection. It represents the probability that the waveforms will be in sync with each other. I have covered sync in other tutorials, but if refers to both waveforms beginning their oscillations at exactly the same moment. Turning the dial all the way counterclockwise provides no sync and all the way clockwise is "hard sync" or always synced.

Learn how to use Ratio B function

Ratio refers to the ratio between the pitch of A and the pitch of B. When at the default setting both frequencies will be the same. As the dial is rotated the ratio increases or decreases. This creates some interesting frequency results.

Learn all the auxiliary controls and connections

Along with the controls already covered, Tachyon Entangler has attenuverters for the CV controls on chaos and sync A and B.

Waveform output come in the form of saw and square. Note that the square wave output is 1 octave lower than the saw.

We are provided with a CV/trigger input for voltage per octave on A and B oscillators as well as a reset for both. Reset will restart the oscillation.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial. If you have any specific questions for me feel free to leave it in the comments of this post and I will do my best to get back to you with an answer.

Cheers,
