Searching for New Steemians – Activities and Balance Analysis and a Small Gift from Me

Introduction

An analysis will be made of the new steem account created in February 2019. Then a closer look will be made on accounts activity, rewards, balance and delegation received.

Based on this, an effort will be made to allocate the genuine users who are active and not rewarded. They will receive a small reward in form of SBI units, delegation and liquid STEEM. The end selection will be done manually from the pool of accounts that meet certain criteria.

A note before continuing. The purpose of this analysis is not to go as much in the of account creation process and stats. The main purpose is to find a few new Steemians, who deserve some push in the back. A much detailed analysis on the account creation process is made by @paulag in her post February '19 New STEEM Account Report. She is much more skilled than me, I have learned from her posts a lot, and I’m very thankful to her.

This is an effort to try to contribute to the community and give something back. We all know that starting is not easy. A small push is very much welcomed. It is nice when someone finds you and rewards you without you asking for it.

It is first time doing this so maybe there will be some improvements and changes in the future. Suggestions are welcomed.

Accounts creations in February 2019

Below is a chart of the number of accounts created in February 2019.

02.png

A total of 19,199 steem accounts were created in February 2019

Compared to January 2019 when this number was 25,054, there is a slight drop in the number of accounts created, but February have 3 days less as well 😊. December was a month with low number of accounts created, so compared to December the numbers are much better.

The average daily account created in February is around 700. The record number of created accounts was on 12th of February, with 1178 accounts. The minimum was a few days later on 16th of February with 258 accounts created.

Who created the accounts

Below is a chart for the account creators.

03.png

Steem created the most accounts with 85,3% share. Next is Oracle-D and Blocktrades after them. Steemmonsters, Steemhunt and Partiko are also in the top creators of accounts. There is a total of 315 creators of accounts in February 2019, with a lot of them creating only a few accounts. All of them are in the others category.

Accounts Distribution per Number of Posts and Balance

How active was the new accounts? Do they got rewarded for activities?

Below is a chart of the number of accounts and how much they posted. The accounts are grouped in 7 groups>

  • Accounts that didn’t posted, 0 posts,
  • Accounts with 1 post,
  • Accounts with posts between 2 and 5,
  • Accounts with posts between 5 and 10,
  • Accounts with posts between 10 and 20,
  • Accounts with posts between 20 and 50 and
  • Accounts with more than 50 posts.

Comments are also included in the number of posts.

Accounts Distribution per Number of Posts

04.png

A majority 72,2% out of the 19,199 accounts created in February didn’t posted at all. An 8,3% posted only once. The rest of the accounts share around 20% are in the group that posted more than once. Their distribution is shown on the chart.

Accounts Distribution per Balance

Below is a chart of the number of accounts and their distribution according to the balance of the account. A note on the balance. The balance of the account is a sum of the different balances, like SBD, savings, vests, pending reward etc. A conversion is made on the SBD balance in STEEM. So the final balance can be approximate and not totally accurate.

The accounts are grouped in 7 groups, just as for the posts above.

05.png

A majority almost 70% of the accounts created in February have 0 balance. An 21,1% have balance between 0 and 1. The rest of the accounts share around 9% are in the groups with a balance more than 1 STEEM.

This balance doesn’t include the delegated STEEM that the accounts usually get when created.

Posting and Balance Dependencies

I will search for Steemians to reward mainly under two criteria. Number of posts and balance. At the end I will go through a pool of accounts manually and try to find the ones with quality content. Lets see how are dependencies between posts and balance.

Here is a scatter chart on that.

06.png

I have limited the axes between 10 STEEM and 50 posts, since the majority of the accounts are in this range. As we can see there is no correlation between posting and balance. Actually, there is a lot of accounts with zero posts but with some STEEM in the account. I guess people are using the accounts only as a wallet. Maybe some of them to diversify the risk holding everything in one place.

For example, there is more than 100 accounts with a balance greater then 50 STEEM, that were created in February but didn’t posted. Maybe some of them will in the coming period.

These accounts are doing great and they certainly don’t need a push in the back 😊. Congrats on them and holdings they have in STEEM.

Searching for Steemians to support

Ok, now comes the hard part. Not that the numbers and charts above were easy to do but checking the account profiles manually was quite an experience.

Like mentioned above I was looking for accounts that are active but received almost no reward. I tried to find them and reward them as much as I can. Not asking from them to come to me. It is a special feeling when someone finds you and rewards you without you asking for it.

Here what I did. First, I searched for accounts with more then 30 posts and less then 0,3 STEEM balance. This resulted in around 50 account that I then checked them all manually.

Since I wasn’t quite satisfied with the result of this pool of accounts, I made a second pool for accounts with a filter for daily posts. Accounts between 0,5 and 1 post per day were selected and balance between 0,1 and 1 STEEM. This resulted in a pool of 142 accounts. Out of these accounts I checked around 100 accounts and found some good ones in there. I ended up with a around 25 preselected accounts and then went one more time through them to select the top 5 that will be rewarded.

Now, the final choice is a bit subjective from my side, but the main criteria were for the accounts to have some activates but not rewarded enough. The final manual check from my side was to check for quality and original content.

Here are the rewarded accounts and the rewards.

NoAccountReward
1@faithroswell6 SBI, 30 SP delegation, 2 STEEM
2@star-ace4 SBI, 30 SP delegation, 1 STEEM
3@createwonder30 SP delegation
4@melvinmike20 SP delegation
5@soulfulspirit15 SP delegation

Congrats to these Steemians and hope you will grow fast!

These Steemians will receive an automated upvote from me for the next month as well. That is an approximate 0,03$ worth now.

The rewards are maybe not as big, but that is what I can do now. Hope to increase them in time, and the number of rewarded Steemians as well.

The delegations are for one month and then they will be delegated to new users after that.

The query used to get new account information was:

let
    Source = Sql.Database("vip.steemsql.com", "DBSteem", [Query="Select *#(lf)FROM Accounts (NOLOCK)#(lf)where   #(lf)(created >= CONVERT(datetime,'02/01/2019')#(lf)AND created< CONVERT(datetime,'02/28/2019'))"])

The query used to get who created accounts was:

Select *

where

AND created< CONVERT(datetime,'12/01/2018')

Hi @dalz, wow, that's a great initiative! I like the idea to support and reward new users, and I'm sure they will greatly appreciate it as well. I'm not very surprised that a filter alone was not able to provide you the best candidates and that quite a lot of manual work was required.

From Utopian analysis perspective this work has some overlap with metrics already shown in the post from Paula that you linked at the beginning. A new aspect is the scatter plot of the number of posts vs. balance. I'm not very much surprised that this doesn't show a trend of any kind. I think both balance and post count have to be taken with a grain of salt. An account that joined at the beginning of the month had 4 weeks to post or accumulate some balance, while those joining at the end of the month maybe only have a few days to make their place in these metrics. Also I see a couple of app/service/bot accounts in the list, so blindly rewarding them by post count is indeed not the right strategy here :)

Thanks for the review @crokkon!
It was an interesting experience going trough those accounts manually. I have checked over 100 accounts. But I'm wiser now and have some ideas how to improve the process:)

About the issue of account joined at the beginning of the month and those joining later, I have tried to compensated for this using the posts per day ratio. Still there is a room for improvement :)

Thank you for your review, @crokkon! Keep up the good work!

Nice work @dalz! A good idea to bring in a bit of analysis into choosing some delegates :D

Thanks!
Doing my best :)
