Project Details

ReactOS is a free and open source operating system written from scratch. It's design is based on Windows in the same way Linux is based on Unix, however ReactOS is not linux. ReactOS looks and feels like Windows, is able to your run Windows software and your Windows drivers, and is familiar for Windows users.

Development began in 1996, as a Windows 95 clone project, and was continued as ReactOS in 1998, with the incremental addition of features of later Windows versions.

As of July 2018, ReactOS is considered alpha software, feature-incomplete but with many Windows applications already working (e.g. Adobe Reader 6.0, OpenOffice, etc) and therefore recommended by the developers only for evaluation and testing purposes.

ReactOS is released under GNU GPLv2 Open Source license, with some parts released under LGPL and BSD licenses.

Also, take a look to my guide on how to test ReactOS on your computer, without touching a single one of your precious files!

Translation Overview

This is the thirteenth part of the ReactOS translation. There are some strings that were already translated. I'm translating the project file by file, so as I'm encountering those translated strings I'm fixing them or leaving them alone (depending on what needs to be done)

Subject to @ruth-girl's proof-reading, the project is now 55% translated. ReactOS translations are split into many files, so I'm going on a per-file translation, aiming to hit 1200 words on each contribution.

Languages

The project is being translated from English to Greek. I'm a native Greek and because of my job (programmer) English is a "must learn" language.

In this session

In this session I translated the following utilities/apps:

intl (2nd half I left untranslated), joy, liccpa, main, mmsys, openglcfg

The Longest String in this part comes from the file intl and is:

This system setting enables non-Unicode programs to display menus and dialogs in their native language. It does not affect Unicode programs, but it does apply to all users of this computer.

Ok, it might not be very long by most standards, however most strings in ReactOS (a rough ~60%) is 1-5 words, so this is considered huge! When translated, it became even bigger:

Αυτή η ρύθμιση συστήματος, επιτρέπει προγράμματα που δεν υποστηρίζουν κωδικοποίηση Unicode, να εμφανίζουν τα μενού τους και τα παράθυρα διαλόγου τους στην μητρική τους γλώσσα. Δεν επηρεάζει προγράμματα που υποστηρίζουν Unicode, αλλά εφαρμόζεται σε όλους τους χρήστες του υπολογιστή.

The worst/funniest Machine translation can be located in the file joy (this one is a library for joypads)

Custom...

Microsoft Translator decided to translate it as Έθιμο..., which could be correct, but only if we were referring to Our ancestor's customs ;)

The correct translation for this, however, is Προσαρμοσμένο!

And finally, the worst translation submitted by third-parties is by far this string in powercfg (power configuration library):

Power Options, meaning "Change how much power your computer can use" (like in Screen brightness etc)

A dude translated it as Διαχειριστής Αδειών, which makes sense in NO universe, and literally means License Manager.

The correct one would be Επιλογές Ενέργειας and it was suggested by some other user.

Word Count

I translated 1177 words, minus an estimated 8% for duplicates and untranslated words, which brings us to ~1083 words, for a total of 14524 words out of 37669 words. All numbers were rounded to the nearest integer (as you obviously can't translate 724.24 words)

Proof of Authorship

tl;dr version

ReactOS is a great project, aiming to help the average Joe try a free alternative operating system, without having to change a lot of his habits. It has a long way to go though, as it is still in alpha development stage. I'm proud to translate this into Greek, as I've always been secretly supporting this project!

I have translated 1177 words (-8% for duplicates and untranslated words = 1083 words) for a total of 14524 words out of 37669 words. I'm now translating libraries used to power your devices, and things can get ugly! But I have faith in me, and I'll pull through ;)

Thank you everyone for taking your time to read about my contribution. Big thanks to the @utopian-io and @davinci.witness teams for making this possible, and also to the rest of the people of the Greek Translation Team that I'm proud to be part of. Feel free to follow the rest of them to check their translations!

Thank you for another contribution to the Davinci-Utopian translation project @dimitrisp!
This was your 31st contribution to the category and the 13th part of the ReactOS project.

You gave us a correct piece again, “clean” and accurate. There were only very few typos that don’t lower the quality of your translation whatsoever. ReactOS is a big project, it contains some demanding files, but you are able to deliver the best final result possible.

Your contribution post is also correct and detailed. I love the idea of “enriching” your post with failed attempts to translate your project. This is the “evidence” we need to persuade people for the necessity of an organised and controlled translations group that will ensure correct and quality translations.

All in all, you have done a very good job again! Thank you for being part of this team!
