Suggestions category - Weekly report: #2

in #utopian-io5 years ago

This is a weekly report of the Suggestions category. It contains basic stats, tips and interesting open source projects to start contributing. Also, I will show you the most common mistakes of this week and how to fix them.

In this post:

  • Category summary
  • Top scored contributions
  • Common mistakes and how to fix them
  • Interesting open source projects

Category summary

source

  • Week: 44: from Oct. 25 to Nov. 1
  • There were 11 contributions of which 6 were, or will be, rewarded.
  • The average score was 46.2
  • There were a total of 9 unique contributors in the category.

Number of reviewed and rewarded contributions by week

Average score by week

As you can see in the charts, this week we had more contributions than the previous weeks (3x more than the week 43). Although the number of rewarded contributions has increased, the average score was the lowest of the past four weeks. This happens because regular contributors usually get higher scores than the newest.
An example of this is the week 43 which got 4/4 rewarded contributions (made by regular contributors). The average score of that week is 62 (25% higher than the week 44, which got 11 contributions). Remember that upvotes are never guaranteed.

Since we did not have Staff picks this week, these are some good contributions to read.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

source

The aim of this section is to show you the most common mistakes found this week. Followed by a short description and some tips when applicable. I split the section in two: Contributions with a score of 25 or less and Contributions with a score of 50 or less.

1 - Contributions with a score of 25 or less

1.1 - The suggested idea is duplicated

This is not easy to spot, so do not rush and take few minutes to check it.

  • Go to the repository of the project and check the Issues Tracker.
  • Remove the is:open filter from the search field (to look for open and closed issues).
  • Write a word (or two). The keyword(s) of the feature(s) you are going to submit.

After that, look at if someone submitted it on Utopian in the past, a good search engine for that is AskSteem

1.2 - The GitHub repository does not contain a License file

As you may know, the GitHub repository linked to the submission post must contain an open source license.

The Github repository linked to the submission post must contain the project’s source code, a readme file with usage and install instructions and an appropriate open source license, or be directly connected to such a repository. Github Integration Policy

Always take a few minutes an check this before submitting a contribution. Here you can find more information about this: How to choose a valid repository.

2 - Contributions with a score of 50 or less

2.1 - The proposal is not detailed enough

The proposal should be as informative and descriptive as possible. This will help the project owner (and the people who read your post) to understand your suggestion. Avoid being vague about the benefits of your idea.

Interesting open source projects

In case that you want to contribute to the Suggestions category but do not know any project, check this list.

1 - CoinGecko (@coingecko)

As you may know CoinGecko is officially on Utopian. They are "one of the earliest and largest cryptocurrency ranking websites in the world, active since April 2014. They now track close to 3,000 coins from over 200 crypto exchanges, with millions of visits to their website and a multitude of applications using their free API." [source]

2 - Actifit (@actifit)

Actifit was created by our CM @mcfarhat and "aims to incentivize fitness activity via providing the means to automatically track your daily activity count, maintain your activity history on a daily basis, submit this activity to the steem blockchain, and receive rewards via Steem upvotes and Actifit tokens." [source]

3 - Contest Hero (@contest-hero)

The great Utopian Moderator @tobias-g built this cool project. It is pretty new, I am sure that you would find a lot of useful features to suggest.
"Contest Hero is a casual application built upon the Steem blockchain that allows you to create, manage, find and enter contests. By providing a dedicated set of tools to contests creators and contestants, Contest Hero hopes to provide value through increased engagement and increased reward for great contests." [source]

This is a fantastic update. Adding the tips and information to the usual (well, as usual as something can be in its second iteration) data really makes it stand out. Well done!

Please note that while I haven't changed the footer, I am not scoring #iamutopian posts based on the questionnaire. They have their own metric, and that will be the case until we go live with the new guidelines and new questionnaire, which will be comprehensive enough to reflect these types of posts.

Your contribution has been evaluated according to Utopian policies and guidelines, as well as a predefined set of questions pertaining to the category.

Thanks Didi!

Thank you for your review, @didic! Keep up the good work!

Hello @favcau I wanted to come by and see your weekly report. Nice job on this post and great idea to have some hints on how to make a better post.
I'm wondering why the average score is so low? For example last week you had 4 posts from regular posters. Average only 61 for regular contributors. Do you think your questions are too hard or they are not producing above D- grade quality? Or did you just have one really bad post that lowered the average?
For me 61 grade is just 2 points above failure. What do you think?

Hey, thank you for passing by :)
You're right, 60 isn't high but it's a good score for the category.
And maybe we're also too strict. In the past we (Suggestions Category) had ~300 contributions per week and many people were trying to game the system.
Maybe we have to start not to be so hard in our reviews.
Another thing is that the presentation of a post could be excellent but the suggested idea not so valuable or original.

Wow I would not know what to do with 300 contributions? How did you handle it to now get it at 4 to 10 per week?. I think a category can handle maybe 4 to 8 per day. But for sure many of those would not get upvote under the new system.
It seems that it will be good to get maybe 4 or 5 a day for 4 mods.

How many mods are in your category? Are they all active?

We have 4 mods and we are all in different time zones so it is good.

The rules weren't so clear at that time and we had a lot of trivial suggestions (e.g.: Change the color of the button "Submit").
Also, suggestions per project are limited (you can not submit something that was suggested before).
And, after the hack, contributions decreased a bit.

We are 4 active mods

Nice update, I really like the new format the CMs are taking for their category updates. Great work!

To iterate your point about suggestions to Contest Hero, they would be truly welcome. I'd love to hear the great ideas the community has to offer and if anybody needs any help working them through, feel free to contact me on the Utopian or Contest Hero discord :D

Hey! Thank you!
That's great! I will continue spreading the word. I'm sure that we will see new contributions to Contest Hero :)

Congratulations! Your post has been selected as a daily Steemit truffle! It is listed on rank 15 of all contributions awarded today. You can find the TOP DAILY TRUFFLE PICKS HERE.

I upvoted your contribution because to my mind your post is at least 10 SBD worth and should receive 110 votes. It's now up to the lovely Steemit community to make this come true.
