Getting to know more about Carnet features And accessing backed up files via carnet nextcloud server (part 2)

in #utopian-io5 years ago (edited)

My last three posts is the blog post I made expressing how excited I was using Carnet. A note taking application with rich text editor.
From the post, I discussed reasons why carnet editor is more preferred compared to turtl and markor. I listed the features available on carnet and I promised to discuss more on them in this post. We were also able to look at the processes needed to get it installed on an android device and linking it to your nextcloud app. If you missed the post, You should check it out.

This application is really what it is. I mean, It's text editor is truly rich with features that lets you write outstanding article. Ever since i started using carnet, I have noticed that it takes me less time to write same amount of customized words compared to when I use other text editing apps. Some text editors could be frustrating at times making it difficult for me to flow while I type.

I am glad to bring to you the part two of my experience with carnet. In this article, we will generally look at:

  • Features available on carnet.
  • How to view your backed up file on nextcloud.

Continuing from the last point were we stopped. Launching carnet will show you a blank page with a + sign okna.jpg
This sign is common on most document taking apps. It mostly shows up when you're using an app for the first time and it simply means Create(Create new file, create new document and so on). Once you click on it, You would be taken to another empty page where you are allowed to type. This page is known as the text editing page.

Editors Features

The reason carnet is known to be a rich text editor is because of the features available on the editing page. I said it's more preferred to other frustrating apps is because, carnet is an open source ( it's free to all, ads free).

Text formatting, Text color, Background color, Text alignment, Text editing, Ability to add media files and Tools.

Just as I have said in my previous post that carnet beats especially turtl in texting editing. With features listed above, You would easily be allowed to format your texts with basic tools like bold, underline and so on. But there are some other unique features like changing text and background from their default color to your desired color and aligning texts.

Creating a TO-DO list is also available via the editor. It's easy to access by clicking on just a single button. To achieve this goal, simply click on TO-DO list from tools option. Adding new items to your list can be done by clicking on add item option. You can add as many items as you wish.
Once you are done with any task, tick on the box beside the task. It automatically adds itself to completed category.

Ability To ADD Media Files

I know this is text editing app and media files might not really count. But there might be occasions you need to add a media file to a note for some specific reasons. With the current version of carnet, you are allowed to add only two types of media files and they are photos and love audio recording.

I have tried adding other file formats like a .gif and .mp4 file. They successfully uploaded but did not display. I will surely create a bug report on github.

Before you could be allowed use your microphone, you need to grant carnet the permission to use it. Simply press allow when the option pops up.

Note Statistics

While I was using turtl and markor, I don't usually know the statistics of my notes. I manually copy the whole text, then head to busy.org or any other online tools to know the amount of words I have written. The whole story changed with carnet. There is a statistics option under the tools button where you just click and you would shown the amount of words, characters and sentences.

This is big advantage to a content creator like me. It saves me the stress of copying, pasting just to check the amount of words I have written. I get more than I asked for. I got amount of sentences and characters.

Home page features

After writing and saving my post, I saw strange options like rating my works, adding a keyword, adding note color. I later got to know that these features are meant to identify a specific note on the home page especially when there are lots of them saved.

Security Feature

Carnet is not a file saving app, but just a note taking app. So the security level is very low. The only security option from the setting is the option to request for a pin code. I'd love to advice you not to save any sensitive file/text.

Theme

Carnet developers care about those users who loves to switch themes. I personally love using light theme during the day and dark theme during night.
Research says using your device at night with a full light shining directly to your face damages the eye gradually. So we are provided the option to switch to dark mode which turns every white screen space to a dark one.

Locating Your Backed Up Files On Nextcloud

From the first post I made on carnet, we created an account on carnet nextcloud server. Now it's time we login to view the files we have saved via carnet text editor.

Launch nextcloud app, you would be asked for server address when you click on login. kindly insert https://carnet.live then hit the enter button. You would be asked for your login email and password. Kindly fill it with the credentials you created from last post. Then login.

Once you've successfully logged in, you would be showed the two folders. choose where you saved your files. Just in case you are not sure where your files are saved on the folders, kindly refer back to carner app settings. There is an option to select what folder to save your backups . Don't forget to manually synchronize your files with nextcloud server after you've changed the destination folder.

Now go back to nextcloud and swipe from top to down to refresh the page. Locate the folder you selected to be your saving folder. You should see your files why now. Click on any file you'd love to view. Below is the image showing my files saved from carnet app.

These files are saved in SQD format. You need to download a rar or zip viewer to be able to access it. You can download from playstore.
After installing the rar, unzipper app, click on any of the files to open. Your android device would pop up the zip opener you downloaded. Select it. It should open the page shown in the image below.

This simply means you've been able to unzip the SQD file. Now it's time to view the file you created on carnet.
Note The html file is the file containing your text file. So you need a browser or html viewer to access the file. Chrome browser should work fine.
When I clicked on mine, It displayed the image below.

Congratulations for you've been able to access your backed up file on carnet nextcloud server.

Conclusion

It's been awesome sharing my thought, experience and little tutorial on this project. We've been able to cover the whole features available on it's editor, home page and settings page.
We also accessed backed up files on nextcloud. It's amazing knowing it's very possible to create both text and media note file on carnet and access them with your html viewer after you've download and unzipped it.

Thank you all for reading. Bye.

Thank you for another interesting post about the Android version of Carnet. Your post is also informative and well-illustrated with relevant graphic content.

On the content side, you did a really good job once again. The post includes valuable information about the key features of the project that were mentioned, and even contains information about your personal knowledge and experience of using the application. This is the kind of content we like to see in blog posts; keep up the great work.

That said, there were serious issues of grammar, style and proofreading, making your text difficult to comprehend at times. Regardless, I appreciate the effort you put into your work. I look forward to reading the next part of this series.
